Expected volume of traffic on a new release

Post by StaticSanity » Tue Feb 18, 2003 12:35 am

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough idea of the amount of traffic you experienced when posting a link to a new video (in downloads preferably) in the AMV Announcments section. I am looking to buy bandwidth, and I am trying to get a feel for how much I should purchase for the first month, as I would like to make it available to all who download but I don't want to buy way too much. I was thinking in the area of 50-150GB on a high quality video running about 100 megs in size. Which would effectively lend itself to around 500-1500 dl's.

Thanks,
Denis

You cant buy way too much. Trust me. GEt at least 60-80Gb per month, and thats a minimum. Btw, you should REALY work on getting your filesize down to a more manageble 30-60megs. With proper XviDing, this should be no problem at all.

If you have a dramatic video, something to a slow song, an unknown anime, or something along these lines, you probably wont get many downloads at all. At least this has always been my experience.

That's because people don't appreciate art. I know this from experience. My crappier earlier videos I made circulate around kazaa like a 3 dollar hooker but my better, more gifted music videos, sit on the side lines doing nothing at all.

Hey, it all depends. One of my videos, one of my BETTER videos, only has 200 or so downloads in 3 months, and being 30 megs, translates to a small amount of BW. On the other hand, my crappy first-I'm-Learning-Premiere-vid has about 350-400 downloads a month, which is absurd. Then we have Mission:Improbable which has accumulated roughly 2000 downloads in the two months it's been out, putting it around 250gb of downloads. If anyone is looking for massive hosting capabilitys from a hosting company, PM me, and I'll give you the name of my host, I just don't want it widely ddessimated here, and them to shut me, or anyone else hosting from them down...
