Are These Videos Originals?

Post by Anthony1985 » Thu Feb 13, 2003 3:27 am

Are all of these music videos originals? What I mean is have they been degraded just for a faster download time. Cause degraded videos are the worst. Everything should be at the quality the person made it at.

PLEASE REPLY IF YOU HAVE AN ANSWER

I've degraded my vids, because if I didn't, they would each be at around 1.2 gb, and in 740x480 with uncompressed sound. I don't know about you, but I dont have that kind of space and bandwidth, which costs absurd amounts of money. Do you?

I make statement move quite quickly fight left up and down quite smoothly over rough edge of sword over next battlefields of green and bright. We slowly while we waited being constipated, with giant green cavern flying brightly over the lake and shone in the eye and down left of the right horse?????

Are you asking if the videos are compressed ?

Yes they are?

Are you asking do they look like ass?

It depends on how and what they were encoded at.

If it's a RM or WMV file it will most likely look like ass. If it's under 15MB, then it will most likely look like ass. If it's a dragon ball Z video, it doesn't matter how good it was encoded, it will look and be total ass('cept for some choice DBZ videos).

Yes, I drop the quality on my videos before I post them for downloading. It means the difference between 40-60MB downloads and 300-400MB downloads. Guess which one my provider prefers.

That being said, I also don't really have any desire to post HQ copies of my vids online. People I don't want getting them may just grab them off my FTP then, and posting HQ stuff makes it easy for people to just lift footage from my video.

However, I *will* be sending a nice MPEG-2 version of my Katsucon video to the AMV distro center for people who really want to experience it. I don't really have problems with this, as I screwed with the footage so much that nobody in their right mind would ever want to rip it off.

There's an argument to be made that the footage is ripped off from the series creator in the first place. I see (and agree with) iserlohn's point, but I'm just throwing other things into the fray ^_^.

Well if you add beat matching, transitions, custom mattes/masks, sfx combos. Then someone goes off and rips that out and tries to use it. That's a very annoying.

As for the other reason for ripping footage out. To just get clean scenes with no transitions or specialFX or anything. So the person can make their video.

You can chalked this one up as being annoying, for two reasons. 1) Lazy 2) I think we all want to see anime progress further and someone purchasing the actual DVDs supports anime.

So if you're lifting clips off of other peoples animes, you're a lazy ass pirate. argh yee matey

What you are suggesting, sir, is next to impossible. To maintain DVD-quality visuals and CD-Quality audio would make each AMV roughly 10 GB each (even HuffYuv is compressing... the only way to get what he is asking is to export at uncompressed). I don't think ANYONE has the space and bandwidth to distribute MVs that are 10 Gig a pop. However, careful compression can yield results which are damn close to the original DVD.

If the visual quality is that important to you, then by all means, distribute uncompressed MVs. See how often people bother to download your work, or how much money that much bandwidth and disk space would cost, not too mention how quickly your site will be shut down for bandwidth over-consumption.

A nice idea, but virtually impossible.

Now, as to ripping off AMVs vs ripping off anime...

Gray area. Both are roughly the same in principle. William Milberry put a lot of effort and time into making Try? Hideaki Anno put a lot of effort and time into making Evangelion. Yet people take footage from Eva for MVs without a second thought, while people would be flamed and shunned from the AMV community for taking footage from Try.

The difference between the two is more subjective than objective. Taking footage from anime series and songs off of CDs is simply what we do, it's accepted among this community as the norm. However, taking footage from AMVs (I'm not going to touch the image quality issues) is looked upon differently, not because it is any different on a basic level, but because it's a social custom that has evolved over time. It's a respect issue. Respect is given to the anime series and the ones who created it by taking it and using it in a music video. Respect is given to the AMV and it's creator by not taking footage from it for your own AMV. The idea that it is wrong to take footage from AMVs, yet ok to take footage from anime DVDs, is a social custom of the AMV community. The creators do not wish for their hard work to be ripped off for other works, so that wish is respected. I'm sure that if Hideaki Anno posted on this board asking that people not use his work for music videos, most of us would gladly respect his wishes. I know I would.

Now that I think about it, ripping AMVs for an AMV is a bit different from ripping anime for an AMV. It would be a more analogous comparison to say that someone shouldn't rip off Eva footage to make an anime series... well, I'm sure you all get my point.
