deCSS is an illegal, old, and defunct program that was the original ripper-css cracker hacked off of xing's unprotected dvd player key. It probably wouldnt work with 95% of discs out there today, and all of its features are available except much better in newer rippers like dvddecrypter and smartripper.

also Vstrip is the most reliable ripper and will succeed if decrypter and smartripper fail

The post about DeCSS being illegal and old and bad is erroneous. Smart
Ripper uses DeCSS (and a couple others I forgot) to decrypt DVDs. Also
because of the ruling mentioned above, DeCSS is not illegal and neither
is DVD ripping.

If you go back and actually use the original DeCSS program, on a lot of discs it just won't work. Nowadays DVD rippers use a completely different kind of attack. Essentially you unlock the drive with DVD playing software, and then the rippers use a plain-text attack against the VOB files themselves to find the title key, whereas the original DeCSS would actually try to unlock the title key using its own hijacked player key.

So the whole DeCSS injunction doesn't apply to vStrip, smartripper, dvd decryptor, etc. because they don't use the method that was outlawed. Granted, they're still probably illegal, but until a court steps in and outlaws that algorithm you're ok. :)

Of course that's really irrelevant because now there's a legal precedent
saying that you can rip your own DVDs as long as you dont distribute
copies of it. AMVs, however reside in much murkier, untested waters.
