Why is it that we diss peeps like Barney the dinosaur or Teletubbies for their cuteness and love anime like Ryo-oki for the same reason?

The teletubbies are not cute, they are disturbing. There is a giant baby inside the sun...and they just look freaky to me.

A lot of children's programming isn't cute to me. Those british trains and planes with human faces on them are weird.

But they are mostly annoying because they are designed for children. They are redundant, unimaginative plots (wouldn't want to confuse the drooling infant now) and they speak in loud high pitched voices intended to continue to grab and keep the limited attention span of babies.

Also, Barney can't turn into a whomping great starship.

But Misty's got it: B'harnee (true demonic name) and the Teletubbies are geared for a much younger audience than something like Tenchi Muyou, although I've heard stoners and trippers seem to like Teletubbies...

I never watched the Teletubbies. Frankly, they scared the living crap out of me.

But... Ryo-oki never tried to sing really frightening songs to me. Japan, I say, has made an art out of being cute while America only succeeds in being very odd.

Barney is not cute. Barney is a fucking tyrranosaurus rex, and the reason they were always getting new kids on that show is because he frikken eats them.

Teletubbies... hell, everyone knows that the Teletubbies are demons sent to turn human infants into tomorrow's army of mindless fleshy automotons.

So, as we can see, an abstract frame of reference such as cuteness has nothing to do with why people hate Barney and the Teletubbies, but love Ryo-Ohki. People hate Barney and the Teletubbies because they are evil incarnate, and love Ryo-Ohki because she is nothing but sweetness and cuddles, with a few laser cannons thrown in for flavor.
