I also despise hardsubs, but I equally loathe really frikkin' fast subtitles.

I mean, I'm a fast reader, but Synch Point's FLCL subs are blazin'.

Fortunately, I have the dialogue memorized, so I just watch it in Japanese with the audio off now. I know enough Japanese phrases and words to make sure I know what line it's on. 8)

Obviously the above should state "Japanese with the subtitles off" not Japanese with the audio off.

Argh.

All this time, and this place still doesn't have an EDIT button???? *weep*

Anyway, it might just be my copy, but it seems like on the FLCL DVD 1 the subtitles just flash for one second, like an error. It would appear they didn't spend much time on the subtitles; either that, or they did it intentionally to push their dub.

Nope, no edit button. And believe me, after spending time on the ShadowWorld Productions Forum, I've come to LOVE the edit button.

I dunno about the subs flashing briefly, but on my copy, they go about as fast as the conversation, which is FAST at points. The manga scene, I had to keep rewinding the damn thing because I kept missing stuff.

Well, it's better than having the subs lag behind the conversation. Although, the more Japanese I (slowly) learn, the more I can pick out bits thast aren't translated quite right. Like in Key the Metal Idol. Tokiko doesn't refer to herself in the third person quite as much as the subtitles would have you believe. (and if you haven't seen KtMI, I recommend it.)
