Top 5 Amv's Of The Month: January
Yes guys its finally here, The thing you’ve all been waiting for (or not). The amv top 5 the month. I must say it wasn’t easy to choose just 5 amvs out of the bunch. But it tried and here it is. I’d also like to add that when choosing the vids I took a little out of every style. I did this because I think you can’t really compare an action vid with a drama vid. So by doing this I just choose the ‘best’ out of every category. I’ll also post the reviews I wrote about them, so you guys can see what I’ve been doing this past days.
I’ll wont keep you guys waiting any longer, so here the are.
The winners are (in no particular order) *drum role please….*

Good
Let me start with saying, I really like this video. Not only is it a Cowboy Bebop vid (which is one of my favourite animes) but also the kind of timing that was used, is really my thing. The things that I think make good videos are: Concept/Timing/Emotion. I found all 3 of these in this video. More about this later on in the Review.
Originality: I’ve seen a few Cowboy Bebop vids, so the anime in it self isn’t that original. Same goes for the song; I did a little search and found about 30 vids with Lifehouse. That wouldn’t be really good if the approach would be normal, which isn’t the case. For example I really love those Silhouettes you made. And I have never seen those in Amvs so that’s a plus point (this is also a good starting point for your concept). I Think I’ll Give a 9 for this.
Capture: Well there’s not a lot to say about this, it is just the way it is supposed to be. So a 10 fits really well.
Sound: Well If Listened to you mv a few times but the heard nothing funny, I could pump my speakers up to full volume without making the sound go all funny, so again a 10 is at place
Action: This is a thing I really liked about this song, a real nice combination of Timing and emotion. Both were synched perfectly. On some spots I really liked the timing and was more like a real action vid, and on other spot I really felt the Emotion. And like I said you need both in a good Amv so a really nice Job done here. Same goes here, 10.
Effects: Well I think, you really did a nice job here. Lets start with those Silhouettes, Nicely done the really added an extra feel to the vid. Well no really big effect besides that. You got the usual fades and transparencies, which I might add you did nicely. I also noticed another effect you used. At 2:56. The Radial blur, it really made the beat kick in there. Nice Job. I’ll give you an 9 for this (10 is for videos like Shameless Rock ;))
Effort: Really hate this part, but oke. I’ve read on the forum that you spend about a lot of hours (don’t know the number anymore) with those silhouettes. So I’ll make it easy 10
Review: Well this is not real hard; I’ve seen this vid about 20 times before I wrote this Op. So not a lot to write about, I’ll just give you a 9 and be done with it.
Overall: Well it’s a real good vid with a good vibe. And the most important thing it has the Concept/Timing/Emotion thing I was talking about. It has a nice video/audio quality and Nice Effects. Another good thing I would like to notice is the revealing of the shadows (silhouettes) at the end of the AMV. It gives you a ‘complete’ feeling when you’ve watched it. It all falls to place. So this will be a 9
Bad
Oke this is gonna be real hard. How to find a bad thing in a really good amv (somebody might want to make a guide about that :p).
I could say the timing was a little off at some places but that would really be nitpicking. So I won’t do that, and just skip this part shall I ;)
General
Don’t know what to say actually. Only that it’s good. I would suggest this video to everybody who likes Cowboy Bebop and/or Lifehouse. (Actually I already did, I suggested it to a friend who really likes both CB and Lifehouse, she almost freaked out when she say it).

GOOD
Just another great vid by SpPanda. Before downloading this vid I already had high hopes about it, I really like your work. I don’t know exactly why, but it’s just who you time and set the mood that always gets me going. And this vid was no exception. I also found the 3 factors that make a good vid, the CTE factors (Concept/Timing/Emotion). Let’s start with the Review shall we.
Originality: If seen quite a few Cowboy Bebop vids, so that isn’t real Original. And for the band, well I did a search and found 5 vids, including yours. (And you are the only one that used this songs) so that’s a good plus point. I think I’ll still give you a 9 for the kind of timing you did. Haven’t seen that much (not counting your vids).
Capture: Quite a nice rip, could’ve been a bit better. But this is nice none the less. I don’t know how your source DVD was (assuming you used one), so I don’t know how close you were to the original footage. So I’ll give you an 8 for the capture.
Audio: Nothing really much to say. Nice quality didn’t hear any bugs or stuff like that. I could almost put my speakers up to max volume without ruining the quality. Nice job there. A also happen to like the song so that’s fine to (not that I try to let my own taste effecting the score, but I still like the song ;)) so I’ll give you a 10 here.
Action: This is one of the things I like the most about your vids. You have a unique style. For example.
(2:00 – 2:35) You used some kind of distorted images and ‘flashed’ them into the movie, giving it a kind of unique feel. Nice job here.
(1:02 – 1:21) You could say this looks like a filler, but I didn’t really think that. It was a nice difference with the rest of the vid, just timing a little on the ‘crazy’ moves of ED :D.
So I think I’ll just have to give you a 10 for this.
Effort: I really hate this part, but I’ll just do it anyway. Considering the kind of timing you did, and keeping in mind you can’t do that stuff in like 10 minutes, you must’ve given it some thought. So that is just going to be 10. NEXT
Review: Well like I said I’ve always been a fan of your vids, and style. So it doesn’t get boring to me. Same goes here, I’ve seen this vid plenty of times and its just keeps getting better and better. So I guess that means I’m going to give you a 10 for this.
Overall: Well again, Nice work. It’s a real nice vid with some emotion. This brings me back to the CTE factors (Concept/Timing/Emotion) I was talking about. Concept: Well that isn’t the greatest thing about the vid. Don’t get me wrong, you used a great anime, and chose a great song to go with it. But that’s not all that could be done. But considering it’s an action vid, that’s not bad. Timing: Well this is one of the greatest things about your vid. Like I said I really love your style. Emotion: Again, it had a nice feel to it. With some quiet spots in the vid, to give it a little emotion, Just enough for an Action vid. Great Job. So that will be a 9.
BAD:
Not really a lot to say here.
The timing is good so nothing about that. Let me think, O yeah. The quality could’ve been a little better. But it wasn’t that bad that it ruined the mood. And the ED thing I was talking about. Even though it was a nice twist to the rest of the vid, I’m not sure if it was really that appropriate the use those scenes. But it didn’t bug me that much, so that’s not bad either.
General:
Well not a lot to say here, I think I’ve said about everything I wanted to say. So I’ll just sum things up.
It’s a real nice vid, me being a Cowboy bebop fan helped as well ^_^. The quality could’ve been a little better but nothing to worry about, as for the audio quality, A+. Timing was perfect, and the Emotion factor was there to accompany it. I would really suggest this video too almost everybody. Especially to people who like Action vids and/or Cowboy Bebop.

GOOD
Let me start with saying, its nice to see something different every once and a while. This month was mostly action with a little drama and comedy. So its was nice and refreshing to see this vid come along. And I must say, it’s a nice style you used, nice variety in special effects. I also found the CTE Factor (Concept/Timing/Emotion) but I will talk about that further on in the review.
Originality: I did a little search on the org, and found that there were no other amvs with The Commodores. So that’s a good thing ^_^. When searching for Magic Knight Reayearth I found a little more, about 90 vids to be exact. I would normally give a 9 because of this, but due to your unique still, I’m going to let this slide and just give you a 10.
Capture: Well like many people would say, the quality is nothing really special. I know what a trouble bad source can be. In this case it was an ‘old’ DVD. I’m still going to give you an 8 because I think you almost got the best out of that source. Good job.
Audio: No long story here. Audio sounded crystal clear. No cracks, errors or stuff like that. I pumped up the volume but even at high volume the sound was perfect. Nice job with the overall encoding. The only problem was I didn’t really like the song; it became a little boring further into the video. But still a 9 here.
Action: You did a pretty nice job here. Not just ‘normal’ timing, but also timing within the special effects. Let me search for a few good spots: Heck it starts with the first ‘drum role’ (00:21), not really a drum role though but a piano ^_^. Again at (00:28), and one at (00:35), must say really like this one. Good eye catcher. Well I’ll stop with 3 otherwise I’ll get a real long list. Timing gets a little less into the vid, but suits the mood just fine. So that will be a 9 here.
Effects: This is the best feature about your vid. That’s way I choose to review it. You used a wide variety of effects; don’t think I saw one effect 2 times in the whole video. You did a great job here. A few highlights. (00:45) Good way of using split screen (guess you can call it that, don’t really know actually). The ‘Bunny’s’ (I’ll just call them that). Nicely done, I really like how you used them to keep the ‘scene’ alive. They were almost annoying, but I think you stopped using them just at the right time. And I’d like to add that you always kept the timing in mind while doing al these effects. All in all, this is worth a 10.
Effort: (damn hate this part). What can I say; those effects and timing could’ve not been done in a few hours. I’m sure a lot of effort was involved. So I’ll just give you a 10 and be done with this subject.
Review: I am not really sure about this one. The timing and effects were nice and all, and therefore nice to look at. But something kept me from viewing a lot, more about this in the bad section. This will be an 8
Overall: It’s a nice vid. Great timing and effects. I’ll use the CTE factor (Concept/Timing/Emotion) to continue here. Concept: Pretty well done, quiet original, and a very unique way of doing things. Thumbs up. Timing: not really a lot to say here. You saw what I thought of your timing, almost flawless. Two Thumbs up. Emotion: Well it wasn’t in the vid, but then again. Didn’t really miss it here. Considering all of this, I’d think a 9 reflects your amv the most.
BAD
Let me see
Review: I said I would explain myself, so here I go. Just like I said, the timing and effects helped here, but there was one thing that bugged me. It’s the music, it didn’t really make me get of my chair and dance. Not that I usually do that, but you know what I mean. And it seems I’m not the only one that felt that way:
Rozard: Eh, it was well done, but it got boring after a while
nhmkamv: lol
nhmkamv: that's disco
Rozard: heh
Rozard: Truer words have never been spoken
And there’s one more thing, not really bad but it felt a little misplaced. (1:03), it seems to me that the flashy effect you used should come a little earlier. It could just be me, but it felt a little weird.
That’s about all in the bad section
GENERAL
I think I’ve said about everything but let me sums things up. Good vid, real original. The overall capture was pretty good, but it was too bad the DVD quality was a little bad. Furthermore, great timing and great way of combining this with the digital effects. Only real downside for me was the music which didn’t really kept me going.
Through Time, Through Space by
Koopiskeva (Jay Naling)
GOOD
Finally a little ‘romance’ to review ^_^, and a real nice one to. I heard a few people on the board say, that this didn’t really felt emotional. But I don’t agree on this. I don’t know why but a lot of these kind of vids just feel right. And this one was no difference. I personally haven’t done an emotional vid yet, but after seeing this I’m positive I’m going to do one in the nearby future. I also looked at the CTE factor (Concept/Timing/Emotion) and I think I found it, but more about this further on in the review.
Originality: I never heard this song before so I did a little search on the org. I found 4 amvs including your own. Not one using the same song, so quiet original song choice. I also did a search for the anime and found 8 amvs including your own. That’s not a lot, so again quiet original. Now the style you used, I have to say I’ve seen it a few times but it doesn’t really bore me so good job here. Think an 8 will be appropriate
Capture: Nice quality. I heard you used the fan subs, in my latest 2 amvs I used them to so I know what trouble they can be. But I can see you did a nice job. I also read you letterboxed the vid a little; I’m not really a fan of this. But I couldn’t see a think that was cut out because of this, besides the subtitles. So that’s oke. One more thing the letterboxing, how do I put this, looks a little fuzzy. I don’t know if you did this intentionally , but it doesn’t look bad, more like something different for a change. All in all, I’ll give you a 9 for the quality.
Audio: Not a real lot to say here. Good sound quality. I didn’t hear any cracks or bugs. I also tried to pump up the volume all the way, but it still sounded good. A thing that also helped was that I like the song, so it was fun to listen at. So I can only give a 10 for this.
Action: I must say this is a real good point about your vid, like I said I never made an ‘emotional’ vid myself. But the thing I’ll probably find hardest is to timing appropriate. I always try to time as much as I can. But that would ruin the mood (I think). But you did this real good. Good timing, and still kept the mood going. I really liked the ‘base’ timing you did (the few that were in the song). Example: (1:00) they really gave the vid a little extra edge. So good job in overall timing, 9
Effort: Not this part again, oke lets get this over with. Like I said you earlier you really set a good mood, this can not be done in a few minutes so therefore allot of effort must be involved. One thing I’d like to add and which I really ‘admire’ is that you used an anime with limited source (30 minutes was it?) real good job, I could not have seen it in your amv. Nice job 10.
Review: Well I’ve seen this vid a few times. I had to see it a few times before I could choose to review this on or another video I was looking at. They were both good so I’ve seen this vid a quiet a few times before I could make up my mind. During this time your vid didn’t became boring. I don’t know really why, maybe it’s the emotional style which stroke me, but it’s still fun to watch. I think I’ll give you a 9 for this.
Overall: Again, it’s a real good vid which kept the emotions flowing, with nice timing. Which brings me back at the CTE factor (Concept/Timing/Emotion). Concept: Nice concept, but not that original. Not real bad though. Timing: Good timing through out the entire vid, nicely combined with the mood you were setting. Emotion: Well it’s a Drama vid, of course you did this right ^_^. Everything put together, nice vid. Fun to look at. 9
BAD
Not a lot to say here.
The video could’ve been a little more original if the style was a little more original. But I guess an ‘emotional’ vid quickly looks like this. But this is nothing bad though. Really nothing to worry about.
Action: there’s one little thing that I felt was a little left out, somewhere in the middle of the amv there’s this, well ‘sound’ and I felt something should’ve been timed here. Let me look it up, (1:35). But then again, nothing really too bad, really just nitpickin.
GENERAL
I think I’ve said about all I wanted to say, so I’ll just sum thing up. Good drama vid, nice song and video combination. The overall encoding was also done with care. The thing that stands out is the timing/emotion great work combining the two. Another good thing about this amv, it doesn’t get boring after one view.
The Bounty Hunters Who Don't Do Anything by
Sierra Lorna/silver_moon (Laura & Valerie Fremmerlid)
GOOD:
Let me start by saying, good job with this amv. I really liked it; it was a nice change from all the other vids I got this week, which were mostly action. So a little humour was nice for a change. Let me start with getting the CTE (Concept/Timing/Emotion) out. I found all 3 so that’s a good start. More about this in later on in the review. So lets get started with the review shall we.
Originality: I personally think this is quite a big factor, in comedy vids. A concept is easily ruined, if it is already used. With things like action, you could stretch it a little more. A did a little search on the org, and only found 2 amvs with Relient K. (1 being this one). So that’s fine. And as far as Cowboy Bebop goes, it’s used quite a few times. But I’ve never seen such an approach, but that could just be me. All in all, I’ll give a 9 for originality
Capture: Pretty nice indeed. Nice quality rip. It could have been a little better but nothing to really worry about. But I thought Silver Moon’s Shadows was a little better. I think a 9 reflects the quality the most.
Audio: Don’t have anything to complain about here ^_^. The sound was nice and crystal clear. I pumped up the volume but I couldn’t really mess it up. And also, nice chose in song. I always find it hard to find good songs for comedy mvs. (That’s why I’ve never made one). So if you 2 have any pointers for me. Please tell me. But back on the subject. A 10 for sound.
Action: I must say nicely synced. As I said I’ve never made an actual comedy mv, so I don’t really know how hard this is. I see that you concentrated more on the text based timing then the normal timing. (Quiet obvious since it’s a comedy vid). And I think you did a great job. A few things I really liked wore: (1:59) Cigarette Spit, (1:13) Throw my mass potatoes… But one of the best things is even though you did a real good text based timing, you didn’t lose track of the normal timing and did that as well. Nice job. So as far for timing goes in a comedy vid, I’ll give you a 9.
LipSync: I always find it hard to do good lipsyncing, but again here you 2 did a pretty good job. There were only a few spots that I thought were a little off, but nothing too bad really. A thing that really caught my attention was the sync at: (0:48) really nicely thought of, (for the people who don’t know what I’m talking about. In one of the cowboy bebop eps, Spike finds himself on a planet with a lot of helium in the air. So the squeaky voice was nicely put together.) I’ll give you and 9 for this, because not every sync was dead one.
Effort: Man I hate this part, Oke lets get started. The scenes were nicely thought together with the lyrics thus meaning you have put a lot of effort in to. So there you have it. 9 NEXT.
Review: Normally with comedy vids, there not very reviewable. Once you’ve seen the joke once, there’s nothing really to laugh about. But that’s not really the case here, for some odd reason it doesn’t really get bored to me. Maybe it’s just because I like Cowboy Bebop, but maybe it’s something else. Who can tell? But it still isn’t as reviewable as a good Action Vid. But there’s nothing you could’ve done about that. Any way nice job keeping me entertained ^_^. O yeah almost forgot the score… I’ll give it a 9.
Overall: What can I say, I enjoyed it. And that’s what a Comedy vid is all about, isn’t it. Let me get that CTE (Concept/Timing/Emotion) factor back. Concept: The thing that every comedy vid should have. And this one has it. Good song/video combination. Timing: Like I said, nice timing. Both Text based as normal. Emotion: Emotion in a comedy vid.. eehhhh. Well it made my laugh, that’s an emotion. No really. Good job. Again a 9 here.
BAD:
This isn’t going to be long ^_^.
Only a few things: The quality could’ve been a little better, but nothing really to get all hyped up about. And last but not least, the lipsync. I’m not saying this is a bad point. Most of it was done perfectly. There were only a few spots that weren’t dead one. Let me write them done so you can have a look. (00:42)We don’t do anything. (1:03) and if you ask us. That last one looked a little tricky so I don’t really blame you with that one. That was about all I think
GENERAL:
Well let me sum things up.
Really nice vid. It made me laugh and that’s just the think it’s supposed to do. Quality was good, and the same goes for the sound. The quality was real good. Nice combination of text and normal timing. But there’s only one thing bugging me. How did you pull this of, with the both of you? I tried making a mv with 2 people once, but we kept having difference in opinion. Maybe being twins helps a lot. ^_^.
Thats it for today.
I’ll wont keep you guys waiting any longer, so here the are.

GOOD
Finally a little ‘romance’ to review ^_^, and a real nice one to.

I would also like to add, if any of these creators would like to give an opinion in return, please review this one, if not no problem.
