Just saw the most hysterical, crack-happy anime ever

Post by BishounenStalker » Mon Jan 27, 2003 10:14 am

Saw the first episode a couple nights ago at the local anime club. It's called "Cooking Master Boy" if anyone's heard of it. For the record, it's...it's...Iron Chef on CRACK! Or if you're familiar with Chinese filmmaker Stephen Chao (Shaolin Soccer), it's like God of Cookery animated (great movie by the way).

The story's pretty simple. Shou An, a disgruntled former chef of the world-famous Kikkaro restaurant in China returns to wreak havoc, now that he has become a Senior Chef (apparently a very high honor in Chinese culinary circles). He threatens to take over the restaurant by decree of the head honcho of the culinary guild (basically an even more crack-happy Chairman Kaga).

The head guy shows up, and tells Shou An that he misunderstood the order. He would only take over the restaurant if said Master Chef believed the food to be inadequate. Shou An offers to cook a dish himself to prove that nobody from the Kikkaro restaurant could match him, no matter what their best dish was. The Master Chef orders Shou An to cook fried rice. He does an excellent job, but is challenged by Mao, the 13-year-old son of the late restaurant manager. The boy cooks what's called Golden Fried Rice (basically rice and eggs), and the Master Chef decrees him a match for Shou An.

Furious, Shou An pleads for a formal cooking match. The Master Chef agrees, and orders them to cook something called Mapo Tofu (or something like that). But with a twist. There are normally five united factors that make up the dish. Mao and Shou An must find a sixth one. And thus begins the battle of culinary wits.

I know it sounds stupid, but it's actually pretty damn funny, just because it's so freaking crack-happy. There are a lot of hysterical sight gags, like a giant wave in the background to emphasize the greatness of Shou An's cooking, and Mao's Golden Fried Rice actually shining. My only advice is to watch it with food in hand. After seeing the first ep, I had a serious case of the munchies.

I have no clue, but I seriously doubt it. As far as I know, the anime club only had three episodes of it.
