You should really read the book, it is very good IMO. The Black monolith is explained much better in the begining and a lot of detail that was (probably) left out of the movie, adds to the meaning in the book.
I've never seen the movie, so I would not know if it is boring or not, but the book is definently a good read.

I can understand the "pacing" how it could be viewed for artistic reasons and all that and all. If I wanted to see that though I would get TLC and watch a space special. :\ I may learn something from that as well instead of feeling like my life is slowly ticking away as I watch some foam rubber move SLOWLY across the screen.
:\ Just not my cup of tea. Sorry to rip on you guys movie, but in my words "IT sucked".

ST was such a crap movie and as far as story goes, well come on, are you insane it was weak and railroad, nothing was unpredictable or even mildly suprising, nothing made you think even the slightest bit. Sounds like a crap night out to me.

To each their own, Klinkster.
I personally think 2001 is a classic, but some'd think the end bits just aren't the same without some kind of mind-altering substance (even though that's not my bag).
In parcticular, the docking of the Pan Am spaceliner with the station, set to that "Blue Danube" music, is simply beautiful. It makes what otherwise would be a simple docking scene and turns it into a graceful Earth-orbit ballet.

I read the book before I saw the movie, and when I saw that ending, it was like, "What the hell is this?" Almost ruined the movie for me. As for why....klinky wrote:...Could someone also explain the meaning of the eye with the psychodelic background is all about all all those wavy effects at the end? I would like to know the deeper meaning of that....
(1) Trumbull needed an excuse to try his new slit scan effect (or whatever it is they call it).
(2) It was something psychedelic for the hippie audience in the late Sixties.
(3) It was a vain attempt to portray the guy's accelerated evolution into a starchild (I think that's what it was called in the book). This is not something that can be easily put on the screen without some cheesy narration to explain everything.
BTW, I'm only serious about #3
