2001 A Space Stupidity...

Post by klinky » Sat Jan 25, 2003 12:53 am

So after seeing the excellent Dr. Strangelove, I wanted to check out other Stanley Kubrick works, so I checked out the "classic" "2001 A Space Odyssey".

This was a LAME movie, besides HAL going whacko, the movie was as dry as stale fucking bread. WTF was with the fucking chimps, why did we need to see them for 20minutes. It was 25minutes into the movie before anyone spoke. Then we get treated to about 10minutes of actually movie and another 20minutes of the unrealistic foam models floating around in space at amazing slow speeds to classical music. Then we get treated to a BORING AS FUCK mission breifing. Then we get treated to another slow ass piece of foam model manueverings. Then we get to watch the guys eat shit sandwiches while reviewing scientific materials, whoops, there goes tuna on the pictures of whatever the fuck that thing was on jupiter.

I think Kubrick lost his mind when making this movie. Truely why did it need a intermission? We already got treated to enough "boring as fuck" why did he have to dish out more "boring as fuck". Then the ending after HAL loses his brains and we get the mission breifing. Then we get all psychodelic and funky fuck, who the fuck cares. Then the ending with the monalith an the old man. FUCKITY FUCK FUCK FUCK pointless pointless POINTLESS MOVIE!

This movie should have totally been flushed down the toilet. It doesn't deserve to even exist, it is pure and utter boredom shit! "I am sorry Dave this movie is a piece of shit..."

Also let's see here, HAL can control those little space buggies, HAL can control the ship. After saying the classic "I am sorry Dave, I am afraid I can't do that." He should have killed the oxygen supply in the little buggy and sent it off into space. But no he gives time for the wussy to get in through the escape hatch. Then he doesn't even bother locking the doors or turning off the emergency vaccum systems :\ HAL was really super imperfect totally so. Stupid fucking computer. Could play chess, but couldn't save it's own ASS.

What a waste of time :\

2001 is an extreme case of where you have to read the book to understand the movie (especially the beginning and ending sections). However, reading the book doesn't make the movie any less boring. I suspect Kubrick wanted to give people a real sense of what it's like to travel to another planet. It's boring as hell. And silent as death. Nobody's going to be whizzing around in X-wings for a long, long time.

The sequel, 2010, is not a Kubrick film, and is more "normal" in its execution. H.A.L. returns in that one, and we find out why "he" was "psychotic" in the first movie.

BTW, the spfx in 2001 were considered revolutionary at the time. One of the effects supervisors was Douglas Trumbull who was a key figure in developing modern cinema effects. He worked on films like "Close Encounters", "Bladerunner", "Silent Running", and "Brainstorm".

I'm sad to read this review from you Klinky...

I just had hoped you would have had more consideration for the movie.

It's not required that anyone like 2001... but the movie deserves respect.

First: It was revolutionary when it was made. No one had even walked on the moon when this movie was being filmed (as it came out in 1968)

Second: Just because you don't care for slow paced movies and are uninterested in certain points Kuberick was trying to get across... to accuse him of "having lost his mind" is an unfair statement. You're blaming Kuberick for not making the movie the way YOU would have liked it to be. I guess it was inconsiderate of him to not plan out the movie for someone who wasn't even born yet.

Third: Even if you didn't like the movie, this movie is a landmark in science fiction. Thanks to this movie, science fiction was able to gain respect... and it opened the doors to other great science fiction films. This movie has inspired many directors...

Again... you may not have liked it... and there is no reason you HAVE to like it...
but you still have to respect it.

It will continue to be held up as a masterpiece after you and I have passed on.

Anyway... that's all I'm going to say.

Why Like it? It's like the end of Eva stupid and boring and just like Pokemon the ending will give you epileptic seizures. I don't have any respect for it because it's stupid. Once again here is a case of somebody trying to find a deeper meaning to something that dosen't have one. Give me an interesting movie please Like alien.

OH THANK GOODNESS!

I've been worried that I wouldn't hear from the LORD-GOD-KING of stupid on my return to the forum...

but here he is in all his idiot glory.

Mr. Oni... as dumb as they come. I've already made it clear to Mr. Oni that I have no interest in debating him or even being civil after all his offensive and useless posts.

His posts only earn my contempt and whatever insults I can type his way. It's all he understands anyway.

Oni only is drawn in by explosions and simple plots... if it's something that makes you think, Mr. Oni won't like it...

He is actually dumb enough to believe that if he doesn't get it, then there never was a point or a message in the first place.

That is some real egocentric stupidity. Woo hoo!

I tell you... Mr. Oni doesn't entertain ideas... he only bores them.

This waste of a name is unworthy of the films he slanders and the great ideas he denies actually exist.

I'm not even going to bother to tell Mr. Oni to "get a life", because he wouldn't know what to do with it and there are so many more deserving people then this nimrod.

Ahhh.... I feel so much better already... like I just washed filth off my hands.

What's the deeper meaning there - that in life threatening situations even the strongest of women will rush back to save their cat?

I like 2001:ASO, if only for the stunning representation of evolution through epiphany. Also, it's a film that has to be seen on the big screen - it's much less interesting on a tv (as I discovered when I finally saw it at the cinema).

Of course, it is the longest 2 hours of your life but that is all intentional.

Actually alien isn't even that great I would say that my favorite sci fi film would be starship troopers now that kicked some major ass. As for deeper meaning HO HUM. I like a good story not philosophical blither blather. I realize some people (May god help thier souls) think differently than me and more power to them. But 2001 Imho is a waste of time and should be shown to prisoners on death row over and over again.

Starship Troopers, a great up there amongst other such masterpieces as Battlefield Earth and Planet of the Apes Re-Release.

ST was such a crap movie and as far as story goes, well come on, are you insane it was weak and railroad, nothing was unpredictable or even mildly suprising, nothing made you think even the slightest bit. Sounds like a crap night out to me.

I guess I am just not that hard a sci-fi fan. When thinking about it more last night, I thought "I bet those slow parts of the film were meant for the sci-fi geeks so they could go over all the different parts of how the little landers or ships work."

I know the film wasn't meant for me, but I heard it was good from the nerd/computer geek community and that it was boring as hell from my mom, WHO WAS ALIVE AT THE TIME IT WAS MADE.

I am going to do something odd and agree with my mother. I like a movie to be entertaining or atleast engaging. Watching a 'space lander' movie SLOWWWWWWWLY, this isn't normal slow it's snail SLOOOW, past a black canvas to classical music is not what I would consider gripping entertainment. Pretty much the idea to me was "Let's make a space travel movie and film all the boring parts".

Could someone also explain the meaning of the eye with the psychodelic background is all about all all those wavy effects at the end? I would like to know the deeper meaning of that.

Also the monkeys in the begging was quite boring, they scream at a larger monilith for about 10minutes, then beat each other with bones. :\

I thought it cover all of evolution, but we get "Monkey Rumble" and then it cuts to a space ship :\

The specialFX were pretty good considering the time it was made, but those were interesting ones. Tricks with the camera to make people too weightless. The scene with the stuartist walking up the cylinder to open another door. :\ Those were all kinda neat, but other then that, the story was mighty confusing & the space scenes were mighty boring. Combine the two and you get :\ Boredom.

Also I would really like to know why he throught he needed a intermission. Did he think people would need to get up and leave. Maybe back then most movies were only a hour or something. I don't know. I think it's because he wanted more boredom in the damn thing.

:|

It was boring I don't care if it was an acheivement. Pong was a achievement back in the day, I don't play pong everyday though :\ Pong was more interesting then 2001ASO

:\
