Compressing Hard Drive: Good Idea, or Bad?
I was checking my disk space on my primary hard drive, when I saw an option to compress the files to save disk space. It sounds good, but I realized that there may be the chance that files could get corrupted, maybe the compression system isn't that good and I'd lose data, what have you.
Anyone who knows about this kind of thing, is it a good idea to use this option?
I know I am being overly cautious and paranoid, but I don't want my entire Hard Drive to get corrupted if the feature has bugs and I don't know about it. Thanks.

Usually i just compress smaller things like office files since they take less time to decompress. also, compress old pic's and older stuff. If you have more than one hardrive, compress the storage one, but keep the one, usually C: drive uncompressed, your system will function faster.
Don't compress large things like your amv's cause that really isn't a good idea. Large files also have more chances of being corrupted, but i think the chances of corruption is very small.

Compression is a waste. If you want to save space then compress text documents or uncompressed images using a zipping or RARing utility.
Compression will not work on already compressed data.
Me and Kthulhu back in the early days would always compress our drives using 8:1 compression. It was a program called SuperStor, came with PC DOS 6.3 or something. It make DOS state we had 800MB(from out 100MB drive). However, once you start actually putting stuff on, that is severly reduced. The freespace count is terribly inaccurate when using a compressed drive. Since it may say you have 800MB, but once you put a 50MB AVI divx AVI file on there, that 800MB gets changed to 400MB. :\
So in general. NO

Lol compression Lol Ok compression sucks Dos used to have Drvspace or something like that anyway it was good when you had a 20 meg hd you could compress to about 35 megs but it cut the speed in half. I certainly wouldn't do anything like it now days.
