how did you learn japanese?

Post by gadoo » Thu Jan 23, 2003 5:29 am

was it through vigurous memorizing?
you took classes?
you lived in japan for a while?

I have tried the top 2, but it's not sinking in :x , and I think it's because I unonciously translate the words in my head. (my spanish teacher told me that's the reason for having trouble with spanish)

I'm also asking this because I was hoping you guys would know a game, or a japanese version of teletubbies, that would help me learn without actually showing me the english translated version...I looked around the net, and just found memorizing stuff, well the ones for free that is :) .

Go to your local community college or university and find out if they offer Japanese classes. If they don't, then oh well. If they do, sign up. If you can't afford to sign up, go to the student book store and buy the text books. If you can't afford to buy the text books, oh well.

It took me awhile to learn the basics but after I did it was pretty easy. I still have problems with memorizing words but I set my self up a system for that. I basically went back to kindergarden. Instead of learning at a college level, I learn at a level that a japanese child would and I build myself up from there. A language like japanese is different from languages usually spoke here in america so its harder to learn. I wish that my college offereed Japanese but no luck, and I dont know a recent japanese transfer student or someone who is fluent so I have to teach myself. I basically went to walden books and purchased some self help books as well as a japanese to english/english to japanese dictionary.

I watched anime through the last two years of high school, and then took Japanese classes in college. As such, I arrived at those classes with darn near perfect pronunciation and katakana knowledge (hiragana less so).

It was a bit amusing to listen to less-prepared students have trouble tackling "ii desu ka" and having it come out as "ill desoo ka".

But I've forgotten most of the spoken language since then, although I still have the textbooks and tapes should I ever wish to dive into it again.

I've been learning misscellany things from my girlfriend but that's it. But I plan to take a class maybe the begining of my sophmore year in college next year.

I'm learning from a book I bought a while back. By learning I mean it sits in my room and gathers dust. ^_^;

Our school has a weekly Japanese lesson after school. I've picked up the odd word and got the pronunciation through watching anime though.
