"..and now you've got to ask yourself: are you the kind of person that looks at lights in the sky and sees signs? miracles? or are you the type who sees these as coincidences.. nothing more?"
religion gets people alive; it helps them live through life by telling them they'll be rewarded in some way for their actions in the afterlife. if you have nothing to go to when you die, you have nothing to live for. this is where my purpose comes in; i live for others. no one else. if i were to die right now, the people i care the most about will be incredibly hurt. and why? because 'god' decided to take another soul up to heaven? if that's what they want to believe, then sobeit. if they want to believe that if they work hard enough and spread their hearts and souls around so much that when they die they'll be able to see me again, then i say good for them. according to 'humanism', their efforts will be lost in some way or another. if that's what's going to happen, why the hell should they give a fuck? sit in a corner, curl up and die. sorry sarah, your daddy doesn't give a shit about you. go fuck yourself!
religion creates a reason for living; a trampolene-type effect on most lost people. humanism is the cold ground; the hard evidence of what we know and can be proven about this life. i say screw that. if i wanted to believe in god so that my children wouldn't pull themselves to your ground saying "WE HAVE NOTHING TO LIVE FOR, JUST THE TREES AND ANIMALS" then god damnit i'll do it.

I just watched that last night for the first timeKamoc wrote:"..and now you've got to ask yourself: are you the kind of person that looks at lights in the sky and sees signs? miracles? or are you the type who sees these as coincidences.. nothing more?"

When my grandma died this past August I couldundersand why people held religion so important. It gave them comfort to think they'd all see her again. I had no trouble keeping my views through that time though even though I would have liked to have believed for a time. But for me, it's like believing in magic, elves or santa. They are all imaginary IMO. I just can't do it anymore, I've thought too much about too many things.
What I always say is that I haven't existed once already. I try to remember what it was like before I was born and that is how I think it'll be when I die.
It's all anyone really has to go on really

it freaks me out to think of death, cuz really whow ants to die?
but as I see it, it's a dreamless sleep. Imagine what you see an think while you're asleep and not dreaming. I can't picture anything, it's so confusing it fraks me out. But I imagine that's death, cuz at that point your brain shuts down to get rest, how are you going to be able to think about anyhting if it's shut down perminently?

well said Kamoc. Even though you didn't say it for praise....
An ocean of dust and randomly strung together pieces of hydrogen, serving no purpose other than allowing all of us to continue in our misery, doomed to an enternity of petty squabbles and meaningless ego trips, until the whole thing one day explodes and starts the whole shebang all over again. - Chaos_Angel

caution: do not read if you have not seen Signs yet, spoilers
the people i'm trying to talk to are the ones who saw the water that killed the aliens as a physical, tangable substance that permeated our atomosphere and composed our bodies; they just saw it as something to make fun of the movie for, something that can be used to their witty replies and retorts. "look at me, i'm a retarded alien who can go to a planet that's composed 80% of water, something that melts away my flesh, and expect to win!" these are the people that have seen what they wanted others to see and didn't care much more than that.
now, i don't want to get all uppity about the movie (although it was phenominal) but it wasn't the water that killed the aliens: it was the alien's reflection in the water. that's why the couldn't open the doors and had to bust out the windows; their reflections burned them because their skin could change into any color it wanted to, just not their real color. they didn't have one. these aliens were meant to, i believe, represent people without faith in something (anything really), without a defined color. when their bodies tried to obtain a color that composed them, they couldn't find one and it burned their bodies.
all i'm saying is.. well, find a color and paint yourself. it's not as hard as it seems.

I believe what I want, I'm not a humanist I am my own religion and I believe in an after life because I can't accept the fact that we as centient beings don't have more of a purpose than the ones we have here. What is the point of doing anything if it's not going to accomplish anything so what you do has to account for something. What is the point of understanding the concept of time if you can't master it eventually?

What I think a lot of you are is post-modern. Especially you, tacooe. post-modern is the melting pot of religion. And just for clarification here...
Atheist - The firm belief that there is no God. Prescribes entirely in self. Freud, Sartre, and all those people followed this. Basically.
Agnostic - The belief that no one can know anything. There might be a God, there might not. We can't know, and we aren't supposed to. Just live like you want, and when you die see what happens.
Skeptics - No one's sure of anything. More extreme than Agnostic, and much more stupid.
Post-modern takes ideas from all sorts of religions and creates a different one. Kind of what I find myself doing. But to be truthful, I'd find myself Christian if it weren't for the Bible. And organization. The basic concepts and principles behind it are firm and make sense. But then its creed ruins it. Kamoc's pretty much right about the Bible. It's more to teach lessons than it is to define a faith.
All signs point to science, none even hint to a God. Other than the beauty of creation and nature. But... of course it's beautiful to us, we have to see it every day. And when compared with humans, anything's beautiful. I'm just here to observe.
Ah well... why do we have to be human? It sucks this way.

Kusoyaro: We don't need a leader. We need to SHUT UP. Make what you want to make, don't make you what you don't want to make. If neither of those applies to you, then you need to SHUT UP MORE.
