People weren't gloating about it, they were bitching about how deleting over spammed threads lowered their post count.

I notice most of them have stopped their bitching.

Ok, I don't think that the MODs have that kind of power (looking at the moderator section on the PHPBB site). Either Phade realized it himself, or the mods suggested it.
