720x480 huffyuv in yuy2 mode is about 30 mbps, it should be possible to put it on those blue laser HDDVDs when they come around. Production companies wouldnt do that though since its supposed to be high definition

how you getting divx on gamecube??? anyway that might be pushing it for a 500mhz processor. Well say its a 720x480 5000kbps mpeg4 stream and it takes a 500mhz processor to play it, multiply all of those by 6 and you coincidentally get 1920x1080 30,000 kbps, 3000 mhz processor needed. That might not be a coincidence though /shock :\

Well either way, hardware players dont use processors ;p so its a moot point. Your probly right though about mpeg-4 would require more processing power if it were at the same bitrates as mpeg-2. But thats the great thing about mpeg-4, you can get the similar quality at about 1/4 the bitrate.
Either way, by the time something like this comes to the market a 3 ghz processor will be like 50 bucks :D

Well, hardware players DO use processors, but they aren't general purpose processors like you'd find in a PC. AFAIK, they decode the datastream with specialized DSPs that are optimized in hardware for the type of math functions that are required to process the datastreams that are read off the disc.

I've heard speculation about upcoming players that will play back mpeg4 streams, but nothing solid, it seems to just be rumor at this point.

Also, remember that any new format comes out at an extremely high price, that was true for VCRs, CDs, and DVDs too. The $130 DVD player I bought at Wal-Mart absolutely kills the old Toshiba I bought for $500 back in '97, I think it was, in every way.

There will be plenty of well off individuals who will run out and spend $700 or so on a brand new HDDVD player when they first come out, and a year or so later, by which time newer, less expensive decoder chips will make their way into the supply chain, the price will drop to where a lot more people can afford it.

One caveat to the above: since DVD encryption was so quickly and easily cracked, expect the media companies to push for any HD videodisc standards to be different enough from the current or upcoming computer data disc standards, that they won't be able to be read in a computer, without specialized, very expensive equipment.

Your 30 gig optical drive in 2007 might not be able to read your HDDVDs to rip them.

I don't have proof, but you know they've got to be thinking about ways to do that.

I'm sorry Zarx, but it's hard to read your posts with that avatar :P

Looking at a picture of Osaka with your technical knowledge posted next to it just seems so wrong.

i find it totally amusing how people belive that mpeg-4 is superior than mpeg-2

I am sorry but it is not...

it is better at lower bitrates.

MPEG-4 was ment and designed for low bitrate streaming video... it looks awesome at low bitrates... but has an 11 megabit per second cap...

mpeg-2 is the most flexible... and has the ability to reach 150+ megabits per second.... an MPEG-2 at 10 megabits per second when done right looks better than a mpeg-4 at 10 megabits per second when done right.

MPEG-4 looses quality slower than mpeg-2 as you lower the bitrate.... but at higher bitrates... can't hold a candle to mpeg-2...

so if they make HDDVD i don't forsee them using mpeg-4.... unless they use some of the higher profiles of it that have not been implimented yet... the mpeg-4 as it is currently implimented is not ment for high bitrate

Mpeg4 isn't 4x better than Mpeg2 only about 40-50% better as far as bitrate savings go but :\

Now as for what Quu said obviously high definition mpeg4 isn't going to use Simple and Advanced Simple Profile like we do today, but the Main Profile L4 for instance supports a max resolution of 1920x1088 and max bitrate of 38 mbps. Main Profile is implemented, DivX and the current crop of opendivx originating codecs dont support it, but thats nobodys fault but their own :\
Mpeg4's developmental studio profiles will undoubtedly surpass Mpeg2. The standard was originally created with low bitrate in mind but was quickly expanded to cover a whole range of bitrates and uses.
Of course Mpeg2 is great at HPHL and High Profile High 1440 Level and I'm glad theyre using it on HDDVD instead of the crap that would be HD mpeg4 on regular DVDs (see doom link), but I do believe that Mpeg4's higher profiles could be even better :\

btw, how much higher are the bitrates going to have to be to compensate for the blocknoise that will be cause by the higher resolution?

higher res dosent create blocks or noise, perhaps more film grain would be left in tact but really theres no need for the bitrate to be any greater than the same bpp of DVD video, except to gain quality in general.
Actually, the broadcast specs for HDTV call for a mere 18mbps, which is pushing it :|
