darnit, they installed quotas due to abuse... ugh.

Anyway the newspaper quote is:

Is this the "culture shift" they are talking about? Whoever this industry rep is (he runs quite a few stores here) I think he's seen too much Ghost in the Shell and not enough real anime.

Besides, as detailed in my articles about business and article 103A, the market is too flooded with artists selling single CDs. If the music industry worked like it should (read my idealist articles) then the music industry would be distributing music for real cheap online, and getting their money from concerts, licensing and other things. To quote another newspaper editorial:

Decades ago, labels released 3000 albums a year. Now it's close to 120,000, she said.
Many are simply bad.

Anyways I'd pick anime before music.

That's a good idea, but the reason the music industry probably won't do it is because they have a sweet deal gouging artists on CD sales. An artist can make more money on concerts, and they can keep more of that cash for themselves. The money isn't too bad if you're a semi successful group, for a few hours of potentially enjoyable work. If you're a big artist, like Metallica, you can actually clean up pretty fucking well for one night of playing music. And once again, the artist gets more of the cash, especially if they can finance their own tour independently of the record industry.

The music industry doesn't like this, naturally, and is more concerned with keeping their outdated, more and more unrealistic money machine going.

Uhhhhh... Who gives a flying fuck what the music industry says/thinks? Besides, that was only one person's opinion, and they were probably in a bad mood at the time. I doubt that they really blame anime. It could just be one of those little quotes that the newspapers took out of an entire tyrade of angry remarks in order to give their story more focus.

Also notice that they mention in their list of recent closings a Suncoast store, yet Suncoast are well known suppliers of large-breated cartoon figures with a sword, nice to know that they've done their research.

Umm.... sorry, but I didn't see the word "anime" anywhere in that article.

Also, if I had to choose between living without music and living without Anime, I'd keep the music. American cartoons are good enough.

I'm not real big into music. Its a secondary form of entertainment for me, I never JUST listen to it. I always have to be doing something else (driving, homework, editing, etc). So I'd pick anime over music, but I can see why people would pick music over anime. It doesn't matter though, because I can't see any logical scenario where that choice will have to be made.

The reason for the drop in sales of cds is the price gouging. Who would want to pay between $13-$16 for a new CD? Even if a person doesn't download all the songs for the CD, getting a few for free is a hell of a lot better than $14 for a burnt piece of plastic. Out of that $14 less than one dollar gets back to the artists. I'd say the music industry makes at least 40% profit off of each CD they sale.

I'd rather spend $10 more to get a DVD movie than a CD, so music corporations can shove it.
