However Ranma was an excellent dub, better than the japanese version which makes them all sound like they're 40. It's a pity that they changed Ranma's original voice half way through though.

I just don't think that American dubbing can for the most part compare to the original. Most of the time what the characters say would sound stupid in english. Japanese actors can be more seductive, make a scream more blood curdling or make you piss yourself with laughter. Plus you get to learn bits and pieces of the language which you can impress your friends with, especially the curse words.
Except for Kenshin who dosen't just sound like a girl it's an annoying girl doing his voice the dubbed kenshin is way better.

Mr Oni
Most guy characters in series/movies have female voice actors. Kenshin voice sounds stupid. They tried to make a small man sound like a 300 pound beef head.
I dont know why you say this the voice actor in the english dub sounds like a wimp just more manly than the sub.

It's not dubbing that people hate. It's the really sucky dubbing that they hate. The English dub of Evangelion is a complete mockery of the show. The casting must have been done by people who hated Eva.

Dubbing also has less accurate translations.

I thought the dubbing for Jin-Roh was quite excelent. Same thing with Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Boogiepop Phantom, Spirited Away, His and Her Circumstances, Mononoke, VHD: Bloodlust, Kite, Mezzo Forte, and Spriggan.

I couldn't stand the dubs for X (the movie), Utena, Ranma, Angel Sanctuary, Love Hina, Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell, and Saber Marionette J.

so, in conclusion, some dubs are good, some suck, and some are inbetween.
Here's how I do it:
I'll try watching the dub once through. If it sucks, then I'll switch the audio back to Japanese with subtitles. Usually I watch the anime dubbed through once or more, and then in Japanese through once more.

thank you.

anyhow, i can forgive the kenshin dub (even though i prefer it subbed). after hearing the love hina dub... *shudder*.

can anyone explain why kitsune has a south-western accent (and a bad one at that)

Because in the original, she has a kansai accent and they thought to make it regional in the dub as well. It's pointless because kansai accent connotations and southern ones are very very different.

No other anime dub I know of has been so...creative and pull things like that :?

wouldn't it have made more sense (and mae my ears bleed less) to try and get the same accent with an english speaking person? yea, it would have a 99% chance of not being good, but that beats the hell out of the ear bleedingly bad accent she has. either that, or they could've not worried about it because it isn't important enough to screw everything up over.

Unfortunately, the closest English comes to having a Kansai accent would be like Cockney accents from Briatain, or maybe urban New York/Jersey type accent. It would still be fairly wretched. :P
