I've never read the books, and I haven't seen the second movie yet, so I have no idea who Smeagle is. I've only seen the old-school animated movies. They rawk.

his actual hobbit name in the books is Smeagol, but the "e" in it has an accent so it sounds like Smay-agol.

He's not a 'hobbit' per se. And yes, it is Smeagol. Smeagol was his name before being corrupted by the Ring. They named him 'Gollum' because of the sound he makes when he coughs, or clears his throat or whatever it is that he does.

Thats sort of it. If you read the caption on hobbits and gollum in the threat I posted about a week back about a Tolkien encyclopiedia it states that the people that gullom was from were actually hobbits.
