How would you have ended Evangelion?

Post by the Black Monarch » Fri Jan 03, 2003 2:31 am

Come on, everybody hates some aspect of End of Evangelion. Many people hate almost the whole thing. What would you do differently?

First off, I'd have Ritsuko shoot Gendo, not the other way around. All of the characters would get over whatever malfunctions they have, then they'd prevent Third Impact. Then Rei tells Shinji how she really feels about him and everyone lives happily ever after, except Asuka, who stays dead. There would be no Mass-Produced Evas morphing into Reis and stabbing themselves with imitation Lances of Longinus, no Black Moon bleeding all over Lillith, no little red dots that no one has any idea what they are. None of that stupid "this is the real world, this is your dream, it's the same as not existing, everyone hates me, I hate myself, blah blah blah" crap that everyone hates. Just a logical and happy end where everyone conquers their demons and gets what they deserve.

I'd probably find some other way to let Shinji strangle Asuka, though... it's priceless.

I was perfectly satisfied with the EOE ending. I don't think I'd change it.

As far as endings go I know that I like the original episode 25/26 much better because it actually had meaning from a characterization standpoint rather than being just a bunch of hollow imagery. Now, if you could somehow take all the character work from the original ending and combine it with all the pretty animation from End of Eva then I think you'd have the perfect ending.

EOE was way more than just hollow imagery. It actually had new characterization and emotion that wasn't just the same old recycled crap from 25&26. Examples: Shinji talking to comatose Asuka, Ritsuko's last request, the Sandbox flashback, etc. And even if it was just hollow imagery, it would still be better than the frustratingly pointless and nonsensical attempt at philosophy that was episodes 25 and 26 and that formed only a part of the movie.

That sounds like the perfect Disney bullshit ending. Where are the pink bunnies that'll clutter the tank so it can't fire cause...they don't want to hurt the cute creatures?

Hey wake up, life ain't fair, I wouldn't change a thing. and the fact that you called your ending logical is BS as well.

I like Black Monarch's ending, except Shinji should die.

Little fuckass deserves it.

And it creates "drama" when you kill off the main character.

Maybe throw in a final "super battle". The current endings may be "deep" and mystical and shit, but we can't forget that Anno was, literally, out of his mind when he was creating the series.

Possible spoilers and shit:

Anyhow, considering the "fantasy portion" in (was it End of Eva or the TV endings?) the end, perhaps Gainax DID want to do "the happier ending" and was kind of tossing the fans a bone.

Who knows?
I'm out...
