In my experience running contests, I've found Action and Drama to be the most competitive categories by far.
Nekocon tried for a few years combining categories and two things happened: the potential entrants were confused about how to qualify their videos and the quality of the contest overall suffered from declining contestants.
Last year, I gave the category and overall favorite votes back to the viewers and brought the traditional five main categories back.
Not only did we pull in over 80 entries (as opposed to 30 or so the previous year) but received a lot of praise for the show.
I understand the desire to innovate or at least be different, which is why I add a special sixth category to my competitions (either Most Annoying or something that follows the con theme).
There's a reason so many contests follow a certain formula: it works.
Personally, what I do is allow for 30 finalists (five or six per category) so there isn't an overload.
Maybe it gives the Comedy entrants a better chance to make finals because it doesn't draw as many entries but that's how it goes.
Anyway, the bottom line is keep it simple and structured.
Exercising any reach you have on social media to get the word around about your contest helps a lot as well...but I'm a promotional machine anyway. ;)

Kumoricon is a fairly small convention but always gets at least 80; last year it got 113 entries and 130 the year before. To my knowledge we haven't ever had a Drama or Romance category. (This year we probably aren't going to get nearly that many but that's to be expected since our application period is barely over a month.) Obviously, two conventions isn't a good sample size but I don't think atypical category selections drive off contestants outright.

Many Drama entries can still fall in the 'Intensity' category, as long as they're gripping enough. But no Romance/Sentimental category seems really odd to me... It's true that in Romance often the more lighthearted Romance videos are favored on conventions, but f.e. Sentimental videos like (just to name a classic example :p) are really a miss in my opinion. .-.

I'd like to help out if you need entries, but all my videos are Drama/Romance/Sentimental, so i'll pass this year ;)

This is an example of Sentimental.

I didn't give this one a chance when I first saw it but the feels pouring out from the viewers..!
There are many other excellent examples of how Sentimental videos can be winners.
Just gotta give them a chance. ;)

Yes, I am concerned about that as well and hope to find a clearer place for them at our contest next year.

Actually, I went and watched your videos and really liked "Child of Fire" and "If I Never"; I think they are both exactly the sort of Drama videos that would remain competitive in our Intensity category and I think you should submit them :)

Okay, these are really cool categories. But now I'm stressing out about the deadline, because I have 2 brand new AMVs to finish in a week. >_< Oh man...

(goes Super Saiyan) HAAAAA!!!

I've been working 8+ hours a day for this. Timing still needs some work, but I'm getting there. The other AMV...I don't know. We'll have to see if I can put something together. >_<
