What mouse would you recommend?
Hello!
I've been using a mouse with its cursor moving all over the place on its own, for months now. It isn't the best for editing...
I was thinking of either getting Logitech Perfomance Mouse MX, or Logitech Mouse M600, but I've read some reviews about Perfomance Mouse MX, and apparently the cursor seems to freeze after 1-2 mins of inactivity. =/ (Does any of you own one? If so, please do let me know how it works for you!) And Logitech Mouse M600 doesn't seem like the best choice for editors, but I'm not sure.
I was wondering; what mouse do you use, and what mouse would you suggest investing in? Thank you!

What mouse would you recommend?
I used to use an old Microsoft mouse with a back and forward button one on each side of the mouse. It's nice a big which fit my hands great for long sessions. Lasted me about 14 years before I had to move on.
For editing purposes I can get by with whatever I'm comfortable holding. So I go for larger form factor, optical, and preferably with a back and forward button placed like my old mouse (a scroll wheel and button as well). Its more for function while browsing then anything else since as far as editing goes I mostly use my keyboard.
My suggestion is go with what works and feels good for you. Actually test out the mice if you can so you know what your getting into. Also, don't cheep out on the mouse either. My old one was only $14 at the time but they're not made to last like they used to be.

I use a Razer Death Adder and I lurves it, but I don't know if you really want to drop $80 on a gaming mouse. >_> It's very smooth and responsive, and I really like having thumb buttons, but it really depends on your needs.

What mouse are you currently using? I'm still considering Logitech Performance Mouse MX, but I've read too many bad reviews about how after a while- it double clicks instead of once, and freezes often. It costs around 80 euros, but I'm not sure if it's worth the price.ngsilver wrote:I used to use an old Microsoft mouse with a back and forward button one on each side of the mouse. Is a gaming mouse worth it even if you're not really a gamer? It's about the same price as Logitech Perfomance Mouse MX. I'd be fine with investing that much as long as it lasts me for a long, long time and doesn't malfunction/have bugs like some of the Logitech mouses do. =/aesling wrote:I use a Razer Death Adder and I lurves it, but I don't know if you really want to drop $80 on a gaming mouse. >_> It's very smooth and responsive, and I really like having thumb buttons, but it really depends on your needs.

Re: What mouse would you recommend?
My short answer would be yes. My old Death Adder finally started dying recently after about 6 years, and I immediately replaced it with a new one. I use it as a laptop mouse (and have a bigger, heavier Razer mouse on my desktop), since it's still compact enough to carry in my bag, and the precision and feel is much better. I wish it was a little heavier, but it's an outstanding mouse all around. For example, I recently used that on the staff table at Anime Expo to run the main playback system in the AMV room, because the wireless mice they had provided were annoying when it came to shuffling around things in video playlists. I also find it way easier to work in photoshop and other similar things. For video editing, it also obviously helps.Nunusaur wrote:Is a gaming mouse worth it even if you're not really a gamer? The "gaming mouse" thing is mostly marketing. All it means is basically a very high-dpi, sturdy mouse that is really precise and has nice grip. It does come at a premium price, but having owned 4 razer mice now I can only recommend them. 60-70 bucks is definitely not too much to pay for a good mouse.
MS mice that ngsilver mentioned are also decent, but I found them more hit-and-miss for me. Logitech mice are the same way, although I owned a pair of Logitech M510s a few years ago and they were absolutely excellent.

Re: What mouse would you recommend?
Thank you for the detailed response! I've just done a quick research on the Razer DeathAdder mouse, and from what I've read, apparently it isn't wireless? My tower is on the floor, and using a wired mouse makes it a little difficult because of the distance. >.< Are there any good Razer/gaming wireless mouse that you'd suggest?Otohiko wrote:My short answer would be yes. Re: What mouse would you recommend?
Sorry for the double post, but I might actually consider a wired mouse. My tower's a little far but I could try to change its location. Sorry for the nooby question; but is there just one Razer Deathadder mouse, or are there different types? When I googled images of Razer Deathadder, several different images showed up.
Which one are you guys using? If you don't mind, could you link me to an image of it?
Thanks again!

Razer Mamba and Razer Orochi are wireless (you can also use them wired). The Mamba is a bit big, but Orochi might be a good one for you since it's compact: http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-orochi
I actually can't vouch for it since I've never tried it, but it has the same sensor as the other current Razer mice, so it can't be too bad!
Personally, I might be a bit old-fashioned, but I liked having wired mice. And Razer's wires are hella sexy
The Death Adder has been around for a while, so the design changed a little bit. Only one version of it is currently in production though. The only real differences in it compared to my old one are the sensor, rubber grip on the side (instead of plastic), and green LED instead of blue.
Anyway, pictures...
Old DeathAdder (left) vs. new (right):

From the other side:

As you can see, they look really similar. The 2013 model is a little bigger, has that green LED, and is rubbery on the sides. Same shape though.
Along with two other mice: Razer Diamondback (bottom right) and the veteran Logitech M510 (bottom left). The current M510 design is really different from the old one though, and Diamondback has long been out of production.

The M510 is literally 10 years old and still works like a champ, but the wheel has got really creaky, which is why I replaced it.

Re: What mouse would you recommend?
^ Thank you so much for the great help!!! I might not go for the wireless Razer as it's way too expensive. =/ I could also buy a keyboard with that money. Plus, I haven't read great stuff about wireless mouse, it takes longer to respond compared to a wired mouse. I shall go for the Razor DeathAdder mouse, thanks again for helping me make up my mind!
This might be slightly off-topic, but what keyboard are you using?

A 10-dollar Dynex keyboard from Best Buy >__>Nunusaur wrote:

Nothing fancy, haha, I just got it cause it takes up less desk space. IMO for keyboards, what works best is whatever you're most comfortable with. Some people like really clicky big keyboards. I like smaller, flatter laptop-style keys. For editing, it's not like you really need a lot anyway. Unless you need something special for gaming or really hate certain things when it comes to typing, I don't think it matters much. Keyboards don't need to be as precise as mice.
I keep eyeing those nice LED-backlit Saitek gaming keyboards, but I could never justify spending the money on that. So I save that money and invest it into a nicer mouse instead
