If you'd like MUCH more detailed info on this, don't go to me, go to ERMAC!!
thanks...
On with the Review of Neon Genesis: Evangelion!
Now, before I begin, I'll tell you now, I HATE THIS ANIME!
What is Neon Genesis? If you haven't heard of it -
a: you are just now old enough to reach the keyboard, speak, and type at the same time...
b: you live in a cave secluded from the world's "evil" influence
c: you JUST now started watching anime and only think DBZ is anime...

For story and execution, NOTHING comes close to this thing. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! The mecha AREN'T REALLY EVEN MECHA! The plot revolves around saving the world from these outerspace invaders known as "Angels". (In this review, I think the original Japanese term, "Apostles" sounds better) Are they aliens? Or truely messengers from God? [watch it to find out cause I won't spoil it here] The characters are like nothing I've EVER seen anywhere either! The character design for one of the characters, Misato to be exact was written in a production note article that her appearence was scrubbed off of Usagi (Sailor Moon). Very minor. Aside from that, Gainax (awesome anime production company) really took it to the drawing board with this anime! Story like nothing I've seen. Yeah we've had aliens attack, but really, not like this! It even questions religion and the origins/beliefs that most people have already learned to live! This is also considered the most "controversial" anime. I'd rather not say why because to be honest, controversy NEVER stopped anime... ^_^
The DVDs for them (saw it on vhs first, then rented the DVDs) are VERY nice. Want to know how nice? Download ErMaC's Evangelion Videos to know why. ^_^ Though the style is mostly cell drawn, ADV decided to "be nice" and use overlays for all the extreme subtitle areas displayed in the anime. [some of the cpu displays are huge and subtitling all of it would be a hassle according to ADV and to the chagrin of it's viewers... Me, I'm glad they overlayed it.] Aside from that, it's very clear and well worth the money you'd pay. The DVDS are the thing to buy, DO NOT get the tapes. (are they still being SOLD?) The tapes come in at over 34.99 each! 2EPS! WTF?!
Sounding as if an orchestra from Heaven itself came to Earth, Evangelion gave me my FIRST mp3!!! ^_^ Cruel Angel's Thesis (opening to Eva) was, is, and always will be one of the living testaments to the saying: good anime ALWAYS comes with good music. The ending [actually several different ones] is a remix of "Fly me to the Moon" by Frank Sinatra. Amusing, yet very relavent to the anime. The explosions, bgms, [especially the fighting bass BGM... dun dun DUN!] and other music playing are also pleasing to the ears.
Do you want violent action with monster blood spilled over the city which you know and love? [or love to hate] THIS IS your anime! The action here isn't mindless. In fact, it's VERY well directed. All the fights and the combat strategies for this anime seem real and well planned. When an Angel(Apostle) attacks, all the generals and officers at NERV are on it and immediately come up with a well-devised plan of attack. (mostly, send out an Eva and kill the mofo ^_^) Heck, they'll send out TWO OR THREE if the need arises. The very first episode utilizes a freakin' nuclear warhead. If that's not well planned warfare (it's not...btw) I don't know what is! ^_^
Lipping in the dub is also LEGENDARY! This was one of the FIRST anime dubs which I have compared to be downright PERFECT. [Shinji's a pussy, but in this scenario, he's voiced by a MAN...] All the characters sound like they should. Rei-calm, introverted, Asuka-loudmouth sexy brat, Misato-nice when drunk, perfectly coordinated during a war, Ritsuko-scientist, driven, etc. My fav voice out of the bunch is probably Gendo's. His English voice to me sounds more "bitter and hateful" than his Japanese counterpart. Bar none... ^_^
The special FX in this anime are well done. Mostly hand drawn, but VERY nice for its time. This are is short however as most of this anime specializes in explosive action. You like seeing things get blown to smithereens? This is the anime for you...
Gainax tried hard. VERY HARD with this anime. It's a shame [don't know if it's true or not...] that they ran out of cash toward the end. Totally BUTCHERING the ending.

As an anime Overall, if I didn't care much for endings (and from an objective point of view) it's REALLY good! It's got a coherent story. A few fillers, but not so many as to "water-down" the series. Character development. Nice character design. (so nice in fact that I heard that Gainax themselves made some Ecchi material featuring NGE's Characters...) AWESOME music, and action that's not to useless/senseless. However, to be honest with you, the ending makes up a lot to me in an anime and that's where it falls flat on its proverbial ass.
To me, personally, I DON'T want to see this series more than once. I'll explain why later. If you liked the fights and if you want to see some of the "plot holes" filled, tough luck. Going back and watching this anime is for people with VERY LOW attention spans. Some of the eps [the funny ones] I wouldn't mind going back to but in terms of public opinion, some people can watch this whole series 3x plus in ONE SITTING!

I'd recommend this anime to:
EVERYONE AND ANYONE
(It's overtones are dark and it's meaning is subtle. I'd rather see more NGE fans than DBZ. I swear to it.)
Why you should not (and why I hate) see this anime:
The ending. To me [it's petty so shut up...] an ENDING to a good book is a GOOD ending. This anime's ending royally butchers it. The "rehashed" ending utilizing the movies was to me, a waste of money. They should have just kept Rebirth. Reviewing an entire series in a few hours is a BAD idea. The ending also doesn't answer many questions I first had about this series. It's also a tragic ending. [I don't mind tragic endings, but this one is rather senseless...]
So, here are my unbiased scores as a reviewer:
Originality: 10
Capture: 9
Sound: 10
Action: 9
Digital FX: N/A
Lip Synch: 11* ^_^
Effort: 8
Overall: 9
Reviewable: 8
For myself, I hate this anime. I also HATE Saikano. [I wrote a review to it previously praying to All that is Good that it wouldn't turn out like Evangelion. DAMN IT I WAS WRONG...

I'll probably get flamed, but before you start insulting me like an immature moron, please consider the scores I've given as a review. In my OPINION this anime royally SUX0RS HARD BANANA...
I'd like to know exactly WHY everyone loves this so much?! [btw, the last time I saw the DVDs of this sucker was a few months ago...] Tell me why it's so damn "legendary"?
