Just making sure before I buy this...

Post by jasper-isis » Sun Dec 22, 2002 11:03 pm

I've been wanting to check out Fushigi Yuugi for a while now, but I don't know if I'd like the series or not. So I decided for look for the cheaper alternative of VCD's. Somebody once told me that Odex legally releases them in VCD format, but I have my suspicions as legal anime VCD's are not very common. So does anyone know if Odex really makes them legally?

Here's a link if you need additional info: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/popular-sg/ ... 76994.html

By the way, these are just for watching, not for AMV-making.

This is a little blurb off of recs.arts.anime.misc FAQ page
Singapore licenced titles. Japanese track. English subtitles.
All VCD format unless otherwise stated.
DVDs with Japanese track, English, Chinese, Malay subtitles.

Licensed by Odex ( http://www.odex.com.sg/ ):
Boys Be DVD (E/C/M Sub/4 CD)
Fushigi Yuugi
Nanako,Amazing Nurse DVD (E/C/M Sub/2 CD)
Serial Experiments Lain Lain DVD (E/C/M Sub/4 CD)
Sol Bianca: The Legacy DVD (E/C/M Sub/4 CD)
Tenchi Muyo In Love 2 DVD(E/C/M Sub/1CD)
Looks like Odex has a license to release a VCD of Fuushigi Yuugi. I have no idea if your store is legit or not, etc, but hmm...this is the info I could find for you.

The thing about VCDs is that, while a highly niche item (along with Minidiscs) here in the States, they're (or were, I'm not sure about nowadays, what with DVD being out) popular in Asia. So legal anime VCDs aren't uncommon, at least there.

A good marker of a bootleg is if a VCD or DVD for sale has Chinese subs (and is region free), although in countries like Singapore, that's a hard call, since there are large Chinese populations, and VCDs don't have region codes, to my knowledge.

Anyhow, here is Odex's website. They seem legit, and apparently do Singapore anime distribution.

In my (admittedly under) educated opinion, these seem to be official Singapore releases, but maybe wait for some more responses :) .

Also, you may want to note that the site you're ordering from is listing its prices in Singapore dollars, so you might actually save some cash, assuming shipping isn't too much, the exchange rate is good, and they'll accept an order from the US (which I'm assuming is where you live).

XE.com, up to date exchange rates. 31.50 Singapore is apparently $18.71 US.
I'm out...

Thanks for the help!

I didn't really think they were bootlegs. The order info didn't say there were any Chinese subs, and there are 13 CD's instead of the usual 3 or so for bootlegs.

FY Season 1 set + FY Season 2 set + Shipping to US = $90.70 (Singapore Dollars) = about $52.03 (US Dollars)

Sounds good to me! :D
