Lyric Synch in AMVs: Important or not a big deal?
So as the title says.
And my personal opinion:
As long as the video and the audio don't live in their own world, there shouldn't be any problem

Depends on the genre, in a sentimental amv i'd consider it very important

Re: Lyric Synch in AMVs: Important or not a big deal?
It really depends on the video and how tight the lyric sync is.
As Copycat_Revolver has so kindly demonstrated for us...Lyric sync can be quite perilous when taken too literally
:
I mean, it makes total sense for the song that you use to at least slightly correlate with the source you're using. It'd be a tad bit awkward to have a song about falling in love for the first time and having people be slaughtered by someone with a spork. (But I have a feeling Todd would still enjoy this. So don't worry terrible editors! You still have at least 1 fan!
)
Of course, you go too literal and it becomes painful to watch. Everytime I hear the lyric "I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad" I DO NOT want to see someone laughing/smiling and then crying. With this type of sync, the video can become very boring and predictable, especially if you know the lyrics or if it has a repeating chorus. And when I say painful, I mean PAINFUL. I've seen many experienced editors recoil in pain from watching these types of videos. Kind of like watching something so awkward that it hurts to continue watching D:
(Example video along with an excellent demonstration of contest whoring)
Personally, I like to edit with a mix...if possible get a lyric or two literally synced and have the rest either be some type of symbolism or loosely fit the idea.
If anything, lyrics should be used as a guide, not a literal set of directions to take. For the love of all that is holy, get creative!

Most of my videos are pretty much all lyrical synch - I think I caught it best in "Space Cowboy". You can get the sense of the song without any audio at all. (in my opinion at least).

Lyric sync can be done well, but too often, people seem to get tunnel vision. OMGTHESONGSAYSFIREFLIES...MUST...FIND...FIREFLIES

Over reliance on lyric sync can push you over the line of actually dramatic to "bad acting" rather quickly - It's like lipsync - do it wrong and you have the equivalent of a middle school drama club play.
