I am COMPLETELY new to this, I want to participate in a contest but are there requirements? Such as 'Certain ages', 'Where you live' etc. ?

Contests are typically held at anime conventions, and each one has their own set of rules that you would need to review. You would usually want to submit your works to a convention that you will be able to actually attend, so you can see it on the big screen and see the audience reaction.

The Contests section of the forum is here: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=5

Each contest has it's own stated rules, sometimes posted in the thread, sometimes on their website.

Just follow the rules as provided to you by each contest you want to enter.
Have fun, hope for the best and don't whore yourself out by entering every contest on the circuit. Like Zarx said, it's usually best to enter the ones you plan on going to. It's way more fun and you're supporting the con.

My personal rule is that I only enter if I plan on going to the convention or I'm asked by someone working at the con in the event they need more entries.

Happy Editing

Is that really a common rule (not entering unless you're going to a con)?
I was planning on entering a few cons, but if it's looked down on to enter without going then I might reconsider...

Very few contests have a rule against it. Like Yue said, it's just a personal thing. If anything, recent trends seem to be opposite of that, a lot of cons from last year seemed to have the same exact line-up and, well, I doubt anyone could afford to go to all of those cons. D:

There's always been a fair amount of debate over that. Some people want their small local cons to stay small and local and think the contest is run for the benefit of the local editors, while others think the contest is run for the sake of the audience and want to put on a good show to entertain them.

There are other things to consider like the cons' budget to ship out awards and regional overlap of attendance (i.e. are you sending something in that's been seen before by locals), though the latter comes up more in debates about trolling the contest scene. The con's size is the biggest factor. If you are sending to a "big" con (i.e. a venue with more than about 10K in attendance figures - AX, Otakon, ACEN, AKon, Sakuracon, AB, ANorth, AWA, Ohayocon, ANext, NYAF, etc.) then you won't be alone in submitting and not going.

I've never really looked into it, but I didn't think many large cons are still local-dominated, but some seem to be.

i was thinking more of like an unwritten rule, like Con-entering etiquette or something like that.

thanks bashar! that really told me a lot.

Some cons actually have that as a rule, its more of an etiquette though imho...

I'm the same way I don't like submitting to cons I'm not going to unless the coordinator is my friend or someone asks me to submit because they are short or something... In any way, I'd rather someone AT the con win, since they took the time out of their schedule to be there.

In our country, it's obligatory the presence of the editor. In the national tournament that I won, I thought that I could just send the clip, relax and wait for the results, but I was called to go to a 4 hours trip until the capital city, and then wait my turn for premiere.

In the international contests, I don't enter to the ones that requires the presence but enter instead to the ones with the opposite statement. I consider them funny and a real experience than the national ones here, since I have the chances to meet editors I respect
