they're not bootlegs, and some dvds are japonese that's why they have subtitles in chinese and english. I mentioned that earlyer. Their selection varyies, what you find in domestic discs, they may not have in japonese discs, same the other way around. Like that escaflowne set, that's what they sell in japan. I mean we sell buffy the vampire and simpsons season one dvds for US here don't we? The really cheap ones there are japonese. How ever they make so much money selling those japonese dvds they can afford to sell domestic ones even cheaper. Those trigun and bebop dvds are not bootlegs, and really are that checp. Me and my friends buy form them all the time, same thing your spending over a hundred dollors on, only cheaper.

Yeah, I'm familiar with what you're talking about. I'm pretty sure they're the Import versions. I bought Cowboy Bebop for about $40-50, with the English audio track, but all on just 3 DVDs instead of 6, was all-region encoded, and it lacked the soundtrack. If you wanna buy the original Bebop box set, of which there were only 9000 sets issued, you're gonna have to buy it on eBay or something for a couple hundred dollars. :?

I'd normally buy the normal ones, but for Bebop, the difference in quality was minimal.

Discount Anime sells this:
http://www.discountanimedvd.com/dvd_det ... ?dvdno=158

Which is a well-known bootleg collection:
October 5, 2001: "Archives of Studio Ghibli" DVD set is...
...a bootleg. The set used to be an eBay exclusive, but its recently moved on to higher profile locations, thus prompting a flurry of "is this for real?" questions. The set is 6 discs and is produced by "Anime Cartoon International".

Team Ghiblink sent a query to Mr. Steven Alpert, vice-president at Tokuma International (parent company of Studio Ghibli), this is his reply:

-----
We have NOT licensed to anyone called Anime Cartoon in Hong Kong, and these sets must be pirated. We have a reputable licensee in Hong Kong who would certainly not be involved in this.

I will be in touch with our attorneys to see what we can do to get the
sales of these on eBay stopped, and I would imagine Disney will want to do the same.

Thanks and best regards,
Steve
This quote comes from here: http://www.nausicaa.net/ (Search news for "ghibli archives".)

They also sell a Nausicaa DVD which is a guaranteed bootleg since no official DVD exists for that movie. Not to mention all the SonMay CDs that are in their catalog.

Well, I don't buy anime, from what I've heard, animenation.com has a REALLY good selection but high prices, and deepdiscountdvd.com has a lesser selection but really good prices. I think deepdiscountdvd also has free shipping, though I could be wrong about that.

I mostly get my anime from Ebay, as I found some awesome, OFFICIAL REGION 1, DVD's. Just recently I purchased a brand new Saber Marionette J collection one from ebay for $14.00 USD, BRAND NEW!!!! Damn, was I ever happy, and I have finally started my Saber Marionette collection, too. I can tell bootlegs from the original, and I only go for the Official thing. I was lucky to get that Saber Marionette J DVD for cheap.

I'm not denying the site sells bootlegs if they do, I'm saying they do sell some real stuff, and I can voach for that. I have friends with the same collection, and they got their stuff from places like animenation, or suncoast and they're exactly the same.

I spot-checked "Vision of Escaflowne" and you're right: they do have the legal Bandai DVDs in their catalog. But depending on which volume, you can get them for the same price or cheaper ($19.50 vs. $23) at http://www.dvdplanet.com. Another example: "AMG The Gan-Chan Files" is $23 at discountanime.com and $19.50 at DVDPlanet.

The issue I have with their bootlegs is that they (discountanime) appear to be deliberately mis-stating the names of companies releasing the bootleg DVDs. They're using generic names like "Manga" or "Anime Studio" which makes it difficult to tell what's legal and what's not.

yeah, but the prices I talked about are for entire series. Sure they have some regularish priced stuff, but some of their stuff can get pretty cheap, cheaper than I've ever seen anywhere else, like those box sets.
