The Wings on Honneamise....any good?

Post by y2kwizard » Wed Dec 18, 2002 3:36 pm

Hey all. I am a HUGE HUGE fan of the early space program...love that Mercury, Gemini, Apollo stuff. I've read numerous books on the space program, seen the videos, etc.

So I'm wondering if The Wings on Honneamise is any good. Would anlyone recommend it to a die hard fan of hte space program? Thanks a ton!

I would recommend it to anyone.

The man who created the movie spent over 2 years just building the world that the film is set in... all this before even writing the script!

He asked... how would technology have changed if this invention came about this way... or how would things be different if this was discovered before that...

The whole world is functional.

Then the complexity of the events that happen to our main character... the emotions and issues...

All in all... the writing is beautiful
the animation is gorgeous

I urge you see the film.

Pretty much what Uncle Milo said. It's a very deeply written, beautifully animated, remarkably moving film. I very, VERY highly recommend it.

Wings of Honneamise is the first production Gainax did as Gainax. It is an artistic masterpiece.

That being said, don't buy the R1 DVD, as Manga fucked it up big time (they took progressive video and tagged it as interlaced, meaning that DVD players re-interlace it). You're better off getting the R2 (costs more, has the dub, but is gorgeous) or finding an old copy on LD. Manga has no plans to do a re-release, denied the problem, and doesn't care anyways as their license expires in March. Good luck!
