AMV flaws you want to admit

What are the biggest flaws about yourself you want to admit when to comes to amvs? Here's mine:

- I can't really do dance or straight up comedy videos despite how many I've actually released

- I hate the pen tool in any adobe application and I still mask in photoshop with the lasso. Don't try to convince me anymore to use the pen tool

- Despite the amount of time I put into my videos, I'm very impatient by nature

- The reason why I'm so behind on everything like video games, movies, etc is because I'm always editing

- I hate doing lip syncing

I'm not patient and I hate spending time to do effects. I can do a rough cut in no time, but I have several videos sitting around needing effects work done. I even have some videos with a full rough cut finished, lol...my impatience has affected some of my earlier projects, which have what I call "acceptable lipsyncing," where it's not fully synced, but it's done in a way where you won't notice (unless you are watching with a critical eye).

Category wise, I tend to put comedy into everything. I don't think I can do just a romance video, just romantic comedies...haha.

- I can't use Photoshop to save my life. The thought of taking the time to learn it frightens me.

- I absolutely hate to look objectively at any aspect of a video that took me more than 15 hours to do. If i wasted a weekend on it, it's usually staying in, even if all my betas complain that it looks out of place. (i've gotten better at this lately - SEiR was already 30 seconds longer including a scene that took me 17 hours to lipsync two faces in profile, each moving in both X and Y directions at different velocities)

- I can't come up with non-sexually suggestive comedy ideas.

- I edit once a year for a few months and then have to teach myself the basics of footage prep all over every single time. Also have to remember how to use my software each year as well.

- I edited huffy footage in 29.97 fps and deinterlaced it from 2003-2009 except for 2 projects which required 23.976fps. 1 TB drives became affordable in 2009, so I started just using the full dvd rips in 23.976fps only because the newer versions of virtualdub and DGIndex couldn't deinterlace as well anymore. After realizing how much more convenient (4GB dvd rips compared to 100GB of huffy files plus editing in 23.976 eliminated the need to deinterlace) all this was, I wonder why I didn't do it from the start.

If you look at the properties from all my videos from 2009 and before, they're all 29.97fps.

- I'm extremely lazy by nature and the hardest part for me is to open up my programs. But once I open them up and start editing, I can't stop.

- I hated the entire 2pass xvid encode method, but I used it from 2003-2009 and became a master at it. ZarxGUI was orgasmic to me.

- I was extremely impatient with ZarxGUI at first and always stopped it halfway through encoding. But when I realized it pretty much took as long as a 2pass xvid encode without the extra steps, I let it go all the way and have never looked back.

- I can't cut audio to save my life, especially when I have to shorten a song. Most people say my audio cutting is good, but I cringe when I hear it.

- I never learned proper mpeg encoding until Fluxmeister posted a tutorial on the NES Project page in 2003 and I still use that template today. Thanks Tim!

I had to FORCE myself to learn it in 2001 (The only thing I knew what to use in Photoshop from 1998 was the filters) to do masking. If you learn the concept of layers (like multiple video tracks), you can make anything.

- I have an issue with looking at my AMV like I would look at someone else's AMV. I've gotten better, and having some fantastic beta testers for my last few vids has made it easier, but when I see my work I just think "AHHHHH.... PERFECTION", despite the fact that I have at least 3 orphan frames and the second chorus is the biggest joke EVER.

I hate masking. Ironically, I tend to mask something in every single video of mine.

Upbeat, comedy, fun videos are the kind I like to do. Editing drama, sentimental or romance is like a chore to me - I don't like it and am terrible at it.

I'm terrible at using transitions and effects.

If I have to choose a font and a color to use, you can bet your money that I will choose one of the worst possible combinations.

I only enter big contests so if I loose I have an excuse? lol...

As for everyone that has "problems with fonts" the key is research, and remember, basic can go a long way. Your best bet is to use "clean" or very "plain" fonts. By plain I don't mean Times New Roman, that font is not plain, it's just overused (it's actually quite styled). Your best bet for background text is something bold and plain like Impact or Arial Bold (san-serif fonts are quite safe for "plain"). With colors, keep it simple, cool colors often look the best, but stick with the "color tone" of the show. Often your best bet is to try and use fonts similar to that used with the promotional material for the show itself (unless that looks crappy). If you still feel insecure, ask a designer you know, it doesn't cheapen your design choices if you get advice.

Learning new programs is absolutely terrifying, which is why I propably won't get around working with After Effects anytime soon...
