It should have a beat, and possibly lyrics though those aren't completely necessary.

It should also be a song you're fond of, that really helps in the process.

I agree with the song needs to be something you are fond of, but also, it needs to be a song that fits the mood of the story you are trying to tell, some songs and anime just dont mix well, not to say that it cant be done, but some combos make the video harder to edit

The song should be something that goes along with the anime. It also needs to be something you want to work with... If its a song you dislike then why use it? It also has to be something a large amount of people would enjoy listening to. If its an overused song, and you don't do a really great amv, then you'll be marked down for being unoriginal.
