So, I'm letting my little brother join us for AX as his 16th birthday present. I already got him his badge, we got his transportation figured out and everything.

He managed to score quite a bit of money from his grandma this year to spend at the con, in addition to saving his lunch money for the past couple months.


And my mother put it all on a credit card that you can't make cash withdrawals with.

The very minute my brother calls me upset to tell me that our mother is a moron is all the same one she decides to call me to tell me to lie to him and tell him how awesome not being able to use any cash will be.

I don't carry cash, and I find it awesome. However, not even having that as an option....I don't see how that is anything other than fail on a stick...

I don't usually like to carry cash either...but at an anime con...not that many vendors have the ability to take a credit card. Plus they usually charge you extra...and of course, she made sure to select the type of card that charges you EVERY TIME YOU USE IT.

While the first point may be true, it's important to note that the 2nd is not only a violation of a seller's contract with a credit card company that they can lose their processing rights over, it's also against the law in most states. Some cons even request you notify them if a vendor is doing that so they can be spoken to or removed from the dealer room for violation of contract. YMMV, check CA law... CA is usually pretty high up there in terms of states that pass consumer protection laws - I'd be surprised if they didn't have it on the books. It's still a merchant violation even if they don't.
