This

or (personal experience from Kisanzi) Lagarith works best with his copy of CS4 and he's getting CS5 this weekend so he'll have an opinion on that soon-ish.

He says "While you can use huffy it has rainbowing and freezing issues. DV works terrible, it may work fine for Macs but it's the most basic and...bleh...It's what I edited my first video with. It came out with weird borders and distortion. Don't use DV, it's the default you use when you have no other resources."

Er... why have I never heard of UTVideo? PM me about it please.

I'm in total agreement with you about DV's imperfections. It's not perfect, but it's "good enough", and it's stable. However, I'll gladly take suggestions on a better codec to use that offers speed, stability, and quality. Quality takes a backseat to the other two. As for HuffYUV... ...that's just NOT gonna happen. The mere idea makes me want to go weep in a corner.

One cool thing about Final Cut is that I can edit a project using low resolution files quickly, and then when I'm finished with my project I can use "Reconnect Media" to swap out the low res files for high res files and then just hit render. So long as the files are the same duration/frame length and aspect ratio, it works perfect. Does Premiere offer anything similar? That'd give the editors the option to edit with DV, and then when they're finished they can just reconnect to the higher res footage for maximum quality.

Yeah, the Premiere CS series also has a replace/reconnect media option under the same guidelines.

Having used CS5 since it's release, Lagarith and UTVideo work perfectly fine. UTVideo is faster but uses more space.

Hmmm.. Well, that very interesting, I wonder what would happen if I made one of those surprise appearances once again I seem to do from time to time :P
