certain editors, like Vegas and Premiere (and Final Cut Pro if your on a mac) are like $300+ new! If that's a lot I suggest stepping down to Premiere Elements or Vegas' simplified version or Magix... all are TONS better than Windows Movie Maker.
You'll find that 'old' versions really aren't that old and if your looking at the top editors in Premiere or Vegas, that buying a used/ old version is just fine (just make sure your not paying for a PIRATED disc...) and can save you oodles of cash!!
I will say however, if your computer is very new (x86 64bit 4gigs ram or more) than Premiere CS4 or 5 is pretty much the only way to go. CS5 is much better... but expensive.
