The "friend zone" is the result of a girl not being attracted to a guy, yet the guy feeling the need to place the blame on some nebulous, unidentifiable entity rather than accepting the idea that the girl just wasn't into him.

The reason why the subject of the "friend zone" generates so much hostility is because it's a passive-aggressive way for guys to blame girls for their own romantic failures. At its core, the rhetoric is "I did my best, but SHE moved ME into that damned FRIEND ZONE," when in fact the reality just is there wasn't an attraction there and it's not anyone's fault.
