Any specific thing you're looking for advice on?
As is, your question is really too vague to give advice on anything other than read the how-to-guides and stickies.

Regarding clips. It's generally considered bad form to take sections of another amv for use in your own, but if you must...then it's a good idea to ask the creator for permission. Other than that, you can get clips from DVDs (the how-to-guides will help here. Specifically...read AbsoluteDestiny & ErMaC's Technical Guides to All Things Audio and Video)

I've not edited myself, mostly because I can't devote the kind of time it requires, but I am an artistic type in my own way, and have learned what I think is most appealing over the years of watching others' AMV creations.

For general advice, I would recommend watching "Failed Experiments In Video Editing", by Big Big Truck Productions, and also "AMV Technique Beat", by member Douggie. Just for the heck of it, watch "Ordained From Above", by member Inertia for studio ManyLemons Productions.

Absorb the knowledge contained within these videos and you will be one step ahead of a lot of other beginners. :)

Well for starters, I noticed your nickname has NAruto in it. If you are planning a NAruto AMV I suggest to make sure it is SPECTACULAR because it have definately BEEN DONE!

Think of a song you can't get out of your head and an anime that would fit perfectly with it.

You should use your own sources, like DVDs. AnyDVD and AVS converter work well. Virtualdub is good for deinterlacing and cleaning footage, but takes some time to learn.

Don't ask the original Musical artists or animation companies as it can lead to a ban of their stuff.

Be creative and be yourself. It supposed to be fun.

Have fun with it is my advice. When you're starting out, just do your own thing and dont care what people say for a bit. When you start getting the hang of things, look around for critique. Also, definitely check out those guides that Kurido linked. I think the biggest issue that new people have is the technical stuff. Their editing programs crash and lose their project files because they arent feeding it the right video files D=

If you need help, dont be afraid to ask ^^
