Miyazaki Youth Magic

Post by RockoCarosella » Thu Nov 11, 2010 4:27 am

My First AMV, released a few weeks ago but didn't think to announce it at the time. Created for Auckland Armageddon 2010 AMV contest as a humble tribute to a grand master of animation.
Couldn't find a copy of Castle in the Sky in time for the competition which is a shame as it would have fit nicely with the theme of the piece.
Tried to use imagery that captured the wild energy, magic, joy and innocence of youth.
Hopefully I'm on the right track but any feedback from the amv community would be appreciated.

Hope you enjoy :)

Thanks Ikore, sorry for the late reply! Yeah this is my first AMV, but I kinda do editing/mograph for a living so should have a good grasp on it by now otherwise I'd be out of work haha. It's been a while since I've had to edit to music without some kind of storyboard/shot sequence so it was a bit of challenge but a lot of fun. Don't know when I'll have time to do another if ever, but I'm glad you liked it! Thanks again :)

Indeed, this was quite impressive, especially for a first amv.

Initially I was most interested in the quality of your video. Typically the most obvious mistakes of new amvs are a striking lack of video quality, myself included, but you have quite the grasp on excellent visuals.

You did play close attention to the beat, but I would of enjoyed it more if you would of shaken it up a bit with various transitions rather than hard cuts throughout. There's absolutely nothing wrong with hard cuts, but the transitions felt very predictable. Maybe a bit of motion here and there would of helped. Sometimes the scenes dragged a bit as well.

I've got to admit that I'm a sucker for internal sync, and your video has some very pleasing inner ones. That was without a doubt my favorite aspect. Sadly, there weren't as many as I would of hoped. Granted this is a personal preference, but I would of loved if you filled your amv with more internal sync. You did very well with scene selection and flow. I also liked the overall pace.

Very neat

Making an amv is comparable to eating a potato chip

I do wish you would make more. If you edit for a living, I believe that making amvs could be very beneficial. I sometimes would discover things through editing amvs that I could apply in my TV Broadcasting class which I wouldn't of previously found just editing regularly.

Hi Glitzer,

sorry for the late reply! Thanks for taking the time out to give your opinion and constructive criticism, I wish all criticism in life were like your reply haha.

Funny you should mention quality, I ended up missing the contest deadline because the first Renders/DVD burns I did were crapiola, had to rip all the DVD's again at a higher quality then re-render (ugh forgot how rubbish Adobe media encoder is) But that's cool I didn't do it for the prizes or anything, just had a few days off work when I found out about the contest so gave it a shot. No one wants to submit second rate work. Still had trouble with the Ponyo and some Spirited Away scenes argh...

Alas I am hardwired to hard cuts, I know AMV's have a different set of rules from film/tv, but I can't bring myself to use a transition in an editing piece like this, draws too much attention away from the visuals which are the real star of the show. Plus I only had three days till the deadline so K.I.S.S haha.

Lol had to look up 'internal sync'. Still not 100% sure what it is but I think I know the parts you are talking about, they're at the climax moments in the song, can't have a whole video of climax or you would get climax fatigue so have to build it up, then release (at least that's what was going through my head at the time haha)

You are looking at to get into television? Nice one, it's a great industry to work in. If you have any questions about it, in particular about editing/finishing Avid/Smoke or Mograph/Compositing AE/Nuke/Flame let me know, I'll answer you when I can I just don't know when I'll be next online.

Tally Ho!
