I still need to actually put in my final vote, but I browsed through the finalists to get acquainted with them (and see if my own made it.) I'm honestly not all that surprised by the selection. Many were not in line with what I may have been pulling for, but with the varied POVs on videos I've read from the discussion thread it all really makes sense. But that's just the way most contests go anyway. I do hope more video discussion happens in future years, I really liked reading through everyone's opinions on my own videos and the rest of the videos, it really shows where our tastes lie.

Sadly, none of my vids passed nomination this year. Not that I didn't expect it with the entries I sent in. They were pretty hit or miss.

All in all, I think this year's contest was pretty good overall.

I've decided that I'm definitely gonna enter Pro next year.

But there is still 5 awarded categories if I remember ?
That's neither here nor there though... the topic is "AWA Pro video discussion" - it's in the thread title.
Oops sorry. So I am on the right thread now ^^
The rules on AWA webiste say:
In general, however, there are usually enough applicable entries to predict awards in the areas of Best Action, Best Comedy, Best Drama, Best Romance, and a traditional "Grand Prize," given to the most successfully inventive, surprising, or unconventional presentation in the field.
So are there sub-awards in each areas to get around 20 awards ?

Traditionally, in addition to the basic category awards, AWA's judging staff has always picked out videos in Expo that they want to give out special awards to. It's basically a form of "Judges' Choice" awards.

Yeah, last year my Haruhi amv won 2 awards in expo, Pop Will Eat Itself and Longest Wait for the delivery of a punchline ever (or something like that)

We've got a list of awards up from the last three years so you can get an idea. The Expo award list is dynamic, but we try to hit a few 'core' categories including those listed in the awards while expanding to about 20 total (or as time permits) sharing the love around as needed. We make up categories at the drop of the hat and some survive the judging weekends, like Pop Will Eat Itself or Most Metal or whatever. Grand Prize isn't so much a "best in show" (really, almost any of the winners could qualify for that title depending on how well it's executed) but rather a "wow...*speachless*" kind of result from the crowd.

Guest/Staff awards are another beast all together. We show a LOT of videos at the con, and not all are in the contests. Some are unique to a panel or sneak out of the archive and onto our screen from other sources, and then again sometimes we just aren't able to award a prize to a deserving video in the contest. Guest/Staff awards are an opportunity for these videos to get some additional recognition and exposure, or to just reinforce said person's opinion of the awards we've already granted a video in the contest. SailorDeath's Longest Wait award is such and example. It wasn't given by the con, so it's not exactly 'official', but many of the editors consider it no less significant.

There goes my theory that if a video doesn't win at Expo, it's a terrible video. :uhoh:

Are you kidding? Kholaras has to say that as not to offend those of us who made horrible horrible videos. Though he did tell me to die when he watched my entry :ying:

I know this would be way down on the priority list of things to take care of before the con now that we're so close to it, but could somebody appropriate on the VAT staff please add this year's contests to the contest calendar? Thanks~

Nah but for real, thanks for the 2/5. We shall see how it holds up after this weekend. :)
