Re: Fuckin' Youtubers...
Maybe so, but the idea is there, so I wouldn't say it's nothing but random shit.Otohiko wrote:I didn't like the video, with or without the watermark. I can acknowledge the editing quality which is way up there, but other than that... "A tribute to" is not really a theme so much as an excuse to toss a lot of stuff in the same place in no particular order, and maybe my artfag bias is showing but I don't really care for the last decade in mainstream cinema as it is. Herpderp.
But it does deserve a very high standing in Pro, no question on that.

here's the apple tree video:CodeZTM wrote:I'm still waiting for a link?

You must be in bronze league.Garylisk wrote:Kham lol. I like referring to him as "some youtuber"
And how elitist can you get? I love how he is like "That's why you edit at the level that you do!" I was like "FUUUUUCK is the Starcraft 2 boards all over again, but it's some intangible "level of editing" instead of what league you're in!"
As for the whole "it's so random" thing, yes, Kham isnt trying to tell a story, but I'm sure even he will tell you that even though this video is 'random,' it still has structure. This video isnt meant to tell a story. It's meant to just be fun to watch and that fun derives from how the footage relates to the music. For the most part, the music in this is instrumental. While there are a lot of composers who make instrumentals to express a certain emotion or to help tell a story, most of the time, the audience that enjoys said instrumentals dont know the meaning behind these songs and dont care for the meaning. Heck, I can tell you most people I come across dont care about the meaning of songs with lyrics so long as all together, it has an enjoyable beat. So that music, regardless of whatever lyrical value it may have, is for the most part 'random' to its audience, but these songs are still structured. Which brings me back to Apple Tree:Garylisk wrote: BTW I watched the video in question just now, and it looks like someone vomited flash-synced live action clips and watermarks all over a music video. There is absolutely no theme, it's just random clip soup that he took the time to actually sync up cuts for. Technically, I give it an B (Some scene choices don't even sync up, but it's a beta so whatever.) but thematically I give him a D, there's no point really. Random movies and things that have nothing to do with one another. I guess you could say it's just a vision based on the song with no other theme, but where's the so-called talent he talked about in that? He even admitted it was "just random" - and yep, it sure as hell is. I lost interest pretty fast, and I think anyone who is used to seeing a video that's tightly edited would also, because other than sync, it's pretty dull. The youtube masses that are used to seeing videos like the majority of Youtube AMVs with no concept of sync at all and subtitles plastered all over the place would probably regard this more highly. Oh, my, that was a little elitist of me just now...
Yes, for over 90 % of the video, the sync is top notch, but we all know that slapping two clips together on beat does not make visuals completely correlate to the music. In this video, the audio track takes on multiple tones. For instance at 3:02, the video start to gradually take on a darker mood. We start to get shown video footage of a girl who's either asleep or dead on a night vision camera. Then image of a man hold up a knife coming out of a stance that suggests that he may have stabbed someone. We then get images of burning buildings and a dead forest. Then military helicopters on the news and an image of a gun. We get a cut back to a clip that relates to the general party mood of before 3:02. It goes back to other forms of terror with the Joker taking a joy ride and the '9' characters being surprised by something creeping up on them. We then have a Hell Boy clip (i believe it is hell boy) in which a white demon pulls out a spear which could be seen as a symbol for war. After which we get a really short clip of a bunch of people holding guns and a man standing in a bed room looking at a bed with someone in it and because of all the clips of destruction, i can only believe that the person in the bed is either dead or is about to be killed by him.
To cut it short on that segment because I dont feel like explaining every single clip in it. As 3:02, you get a transition into a darker mood. We have a few clips that could fit with the party/have fun atmosphere of the beginning, but that's because we're transition. Most of the segment is clips of destruction. One thing I personally like about the segment, is that there is a lot of footage that looks like it was taken on a low quality camera or shown on a television. There's also a shot of a photo of a family and towards the end of this intro segment, you get quite a few clips of a camera. Also with all the destruction going on, towards the end of this intro segment, you get a clear clip of a woman smiling with blood on her face. It's like we as a human race or a select few of us, watch all this destruction, capture it on video, enjoy it and take part in this destruction. At 3:49, the intro to the next segment ends with a clip of a terrified person's eyes. They seem to be stuck watching the camera. At 3:56, the new segment finally comes in. As the transition implied, it is a type of horror segment and we continue to watch or be watched because instead of a camera, there's a satellite capturing all this. We also get a reminder of someone watching when we get the screens from one of the SAW trailers.
This is just one segment of the video that is less than a minute long. Imagine if we analyzed all 9 minutes.
'Story' aside: A big part of the structure of this video, in how the visuals express the rhythm and tone of the music along with having so many different sources blended well together through matching the motion of various scene. These two alone make the video enjoyable because there is a significant amount of structure. This video is to me like many instrumental songs. I enjoy it the same way that I enjoy instrumental music.
Edit: My main point is, regardless of this video being 'random', it is structured and I enjoy it for its structure.

I appreciate your troll, and feed it gladly, good sir.Arashinome wrote:If you were too stupid to find a theme throughout appletree, and can only see it as "Just random", you're participating in the wrong hobby and perhaps video editing isn't for you.
