I always assumed Otaku was akin to those seriously lost/obsessed Star Trek fans O.o You know: the stereotype of that 40 year old guy who still lives in his mom's basement and wears his Star Fleet uniform to jury duty because "military officers are required to wear uniform while on jury duty" and this guy is a captain in his roleplay.

And anime fans to me were just casual fans.. The anime fans he describes seem more like weeaboos and wapanese.

As for people getting really nasty comments - my first op was pretty nasty as well, and like others said, either people can take it or they can't...

I don't think it's necessarily the org being this way but the internet in general... Internet tough guys and trolls (or idiots who think they know how to troll) are everywhere, not just on the org.

Definition, Otaku= A Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga, and video games. A female otaku is occasionally referred to as a fujoshi.........

So technically anyone obsessed with a series or comic or something is an Otaku.

The type I'm talking about is deep obsession, the type to where they are lost in it and have lost track of reality. Not necessarily with Star Trek specifically but with anything. In American culture Star Trek is probably the most famous fandom that has these kinds of fans which is why I used it as an example. (Not to mention it's a fandom I have a lot of experience with)

I kind of wish I could edit the title of this thread to "Proof homeschooling doesn't make you smarter"

To be honest, I never got anything ridiculously hateful when I first started out. Then again, when I first started out, I was surrounded by a lot of really helpful people that guided me through all the guides and stuff. To be completely honest, I didn't notice anything overly elitist about the org for several months of stalking. I do admit we have a fair share of issues in the announcements forum, and the lack of an introductions forum certainly doesn't help anything either.

Nah, you can obsessively collect things and still be well-adjusted, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0thCMzf-CI

lol I understand that it's just I'd been given the impression that's what the word Otaku meant: someone who is so obsessive that they have lost track of reality. The way the American's use Otaku is to mean an anime fan. O.o
Every fandom has their "lost touch with reality" fans.

Maybe the word has lightened over the years to mean more like someone who "collects stuff of their fandom".

I'm reading the original... O.o there seems to be so much wrong in it.

there are still some errors within that text.

But as this is only the first revision, and considering the way the text originally read, I think it has been improved by leaps and bounds.

To address those that are arguing over the definition of Otaku, I would like to say that it is an abstract term that cannot be defined and is a meaningless argument to engage in. In order to correctly argue anything proper questions must be constructed so that they may remove ambiguity.

i was happy when I started out that people bashed me. I am a masochist and sadist so I enjoyed making people suffer so I could be punished. ;)

The editor notes were far more amusing to read than the rant was.

You're also pretty wrong on amvnews, at least in my experience. Although it being in Russian does make it difficult for a westerner to really get into so it is pretty easy to get the wrong idea about it.
