Hmm, I don't know whether it's allowed or not, but I'd start with a scene from the anime you are using that helps represent what your video is about. I haven't seen it done before at conventions, but that's mostly because English dialogue isn't allowed.
You could use Japanese dialogue with the scene and add subtitles, though there's the small issue of the heads thing. But you may not even have to add subtitles if there is no dialogue, or it just simply isn't needed because what's happening in the scene is more important than what's being said.

Though I think starting off with something like dialogue, or even just text (in the center, so that it's easy to read), would force the viewer to listen or read. A good example would be Shinnie's "Eliminate, Extirpate, Asphyxiate..." I think the dialogue in the beginning is what first caught my attention.
It's just like how you might have an anime episode open in one tab, and you're just browsing the web in another tab, waiting for a fight scene to end. As soon as you hear words being spoken, you wonder what happened, so you switch tabs.

There's also the "beginning is the end" kind of scene. The ending scene would be placed at the beginning, but instead of being edited to music, it'd just be the noise from that one scene. It's kind of confusing at first because you don't know what's happening, but it's something catchy if they watch it all the way through.

I also like the suggestion of playing something unrelated at first, like the Kara no Kyoukai short. Instead of the ending kanji, you could replace it with text that says "Shh, the movie is about to start!" or something like that.

Good luck in coordinating!
Just hope that you don't have a crowd full of people with short attention spans. I'd be worried that some might walk out if it was too slow/mellow for too long. :P I like the idea of ending it on a happy note though.

Great suggestions

At the contest I have a video that does the same thing and it works really well. It uses audio of the original anime with one scene. I don't know if they are linked together in the original anime. It's fitting it gets my attention within 5 seconds.

This is a quite fitting solution for me. I'm sure that there is something fitting in the anime that I use for my amv.

I don't think that text has the same impact as a dialog.

Hmmm... do you have an example of this one?

Do you know the anime Hayate No Gotoku? It has a very good intro for a fun amv.

Hmmm... do you have an example of this one?
To my knowledge it has never been done in an amv before. It's been done several times in movies, however, and I think it could work just as well in an amv (probably better in one that tells a story.) When it's done well, it ends up being very suspenseful.
Some examples in movies are Mission Impossible 3, Memento, Fight Club, The Blind Side, Swordfish, Pan's Labyrinth, The Usual Suspects, and The Invisible.
However, if adding a scene from the anime works out well for you, then I'd just go with that. Making the ending the beginning is something you'd have to test out and judge for yourself whether it works for your amv or not.

For example. If you make an amv with School Days then you could start off the amv with the scene of Sekai killing Makoto. And then the amv starts up, and it begins to tell the story of Makoto, Sekai, and Kotonoha from the beginning. Eventually you begin to understand Sekai's motives for killing Makoto, but it doesn't really seem to hit you until the ending when the scene repeats itself.
Definitely something you'd have to test out though. It'd have to be executed well.

Do you know the anime Hayate No Gotoku? It has a very good intro for a fun amv.
Heard of it, never seen. It might work well if it fits the "type of amv", aka a fun type of amv, rather than a dramatic one. Misleading beginnings aren't always good ones.

Oh, and forgot to mention 21 (a movie.) 21 has a really unique beginning. It starts off with the ending, but it actually flows so well into the rest of the story that it makes you think you are actually watching the beginning, while really you are watching part of the end.
I think if something like this were replicated in an amv, it'd be really neat. It'd also have a much bigger impact on someone who hasn't seen the anime.

Mainstream Music + Mainstream Anime + Repetitive Sync = VICTORY

But for a good opening, I'd have to say something that really catches their eyes. Kireblue and Judgeholden's openings really are the big eye catchers. Stuff that uses scenes from anime with butchered subtitles that would make Kionon cry. Since it's soft though, you could have a subtle and interesting and dramatic opening that kind of gives some backstory.

[Oh, and boobs]
