Re: 3D Bullshit
The whitening thing is a 3D(ay) thing... yea - they stretched a bit.
The 3D thing is being pushed by the RIAA to studios as a anti-piracy strategy (get people hooked on something new they MUST SEE* in theaters) - despite the year-over year record profits they're making already.
* Of course HD TVs kinda conflict with this; I suppose they're hoping there won't be an easily compressible 3d codec that put 1080p3D video out in a small-enough file-size to get the dumb masses to latch on.

Re: 3D Bullshit
Nintendo probably managed something, 'cause I doubt the 3D movies distribution on the 3DS would do much with a less-than-optimally efficient codec. True, they have a (very) low resolution (vertically anyway), but otoh the ds doesn't offer too much space anyway: sd cards are "only" 64GB at most at the moment (128GB coming in 2011 I think? I might actually be wrong about it all, though, I'm not too knowledgeble about flash cards availability and all...), so there probably is something planned, I think ─ or rather, hope.BasharOfTheAges wrote:I suppose they're hoping there won't be an easily compressible 3d codec that put 1080p3D video out in a small-enough file-size to get the dumb masses to latch on.

Re: 3D Bullshit
well we know 3D is here to stay... It's just about getting over people being idiots with it era.
I dont mind watching the pixar movies in 3D. It does look nice. I just dont go out of my way to see a movie in 3D because of the extra charge. I do want to see a 3D pixar film in IMAX though.
Now Avatar.... I want to watch that in 2D sometime because the 3D messed it up imo.

I would disagree. I think 3d is just a fad and will fade away soon enough.LittleAtari wrote:well we know 3D is here to stay... It's just about getting over people being idiots with it era.
3d tvs are the big new thing on the market, but are people really buying them?
Honestly, who wants to sit on their sofa wearing big dorky 3d glasses?

Ah at Airbender I got the experience Pwolf did. I got sick of the phrase "In eye-popping 3D!" Seriously, can't they at least come up with a different phrase for each trailer?

Re: 3D Bullshit
I've seen three movies in 3D, and my reactions varied.
How To Train Your Dragon did it right, and really enhanced the film, especially the flying scenes (I saw it in 2D the day after, so the comparison was quite easy).
Alice In Wonderland did it wrong, and the clunky effort kept breaking my suspension of disbelief.
Avatar was a mix; parts were done very well and added visual depth to the scene, and others were done very poorly and made me upset. The opening shot in particular, with the camera pulling focus from the floating bubble to Jake's face was probably the biggest offender, since it almost gave me a screaming headache when my eyes kept trying to focus on the now very out-of-focus bubble.
Personally, I see 3D as sticking around for a while (another 2-3 years), before fading into the background as a niche market, but I doubt it'll disappear entirely like the last few efforts at 3D movies have. The glasses are a big stumbling block, especially for anyone who already wears glasses (I wore my contacts to all three, knowing I was going to be wearing the glasses). Until that can be overcome, I don't think 3D will become any kind of standard, let alone requirement.

We'll have to see what nintendo starts doing. They've got the 3D with no glasses. Based on the success of the 3DS, they'll probably start making TVs or signing contracts with companies to use their technology,

Re: 3D Bullshit
The 3DS display technology (Parallax barrier from Sharp) wouldn't work well as a multi-viewer/general purpose TV since the viewer has to be in a particular area (right in front) to get the effect. It's being used in a different way, though, in the 2010 Range Rover. A GPS display is shown to the driver, while a movie (or whatever) is shown to the passenger.LittleAtari wrote:We'll have to see what nintendo starts doing. They've got the 3D with no glasses. Re: 3D Bullshit
Don't forget Sony is also making a glasses-less 3d system where they detect where your eyes are with cameras and dynamically adjust the display to you current position.

I'm sure that will work great when 2 people try to watch.BasharOfTheAges wrote:Don't forget Sony is also making a glasses-less 3d system where they detect where your eyes are with cameras and dynamically adjust the display to you current position.
