Re: Anime Expo 2010 Anime Music Video Contest Rules Up
i'm rather impressed this didn't turn into another flame fest. i guess i'm not the only one who tired out.
anyway i'm not here to defend myself or make excuses. 2 years ago i entered "Alchanum (The World is in Our Hands)", which is the full 6 1/2 minute version. it includes two songs from Within Temptation that flow together off of the album. The intro contains a ... you know what, just watch it. i'm too tired to explain. then at the second song it breaks into the "real heart" of the video. This year i submitted it without the intro and titled it strictly "Alchanum" (what i titled it may or may not make any difference to you) and explained on my submission form when i previously entered it and what i did to change it.
that being said here is a cut and paste from the official rules:
11b. Significant modifications may be made to a video that would be disqualified for the reasons stated in Troll Definition 3 in order to enter the current contest. However, qualification of "significant modification" is determined by the Anime Music Video Contest Directors...
i took a chance. i was approved.
i had a burning desire to see this vid onscreen. so much so that i was finally willing to drop my pride and cut the "long ass" intro to see if it made any difference. and thanks to the all politics and drama which i tried really hard to stay out of, i got lucky. i might also mention that i entered a total of 6 videos this year (the maximum is 8), which also upped my odds. and i would be lying to say i'm not sad ALL my videos aren't finalists. you all understand this, it's like having kids. i just have a lot of em.
i'm very happy to see Alchanum in the show, i'm even more pleased to have finally made drama. but just for the record i would like to point out a couple videos that I PERSONALLY believe deserve to be drama finalists more than i do. (and i agree with Vlad, just because a video made the finals doesn't make it superior than those that did not, it's all taste of the judges.)
Please take the time to watch these if you haven't already:
also for the record, i personally tried recruiting the second 2 creators telling them to enter their stuff (i knew Inaaca was already entering). EVERYONE GOT THAT? i PURPOSEFULLY gave myself competition all for the sake of the show. and only Animated knows how far i went to get his vid entered.
now having said aalllllllll that anyone else who wants to whine can kiss my ass ^_^

Re: Anime Expo 2010 Anime Music Video Contest Rules Up
I personally LOVED the "Live" video. I love the song, I love the way it the anime was edited to go with it. I was as shocked as the rest of you that it didn't make the finals. There are a couple of shockers.
I suspect part of it is that the judges aren't familiar with the song and its message. I personally am a big Nikki Sixx/Motley Crue/Sixx AM fan and am familiar with the Heroin Diaries the song was written for.
I saw it was a celebration of life and to remember , as the song says, that life is beautiful. I even made that argument when a few of the judges looked at me and were like WTF? Xstylus can back me on this one he was there.
Regarding Alchanum. Part of the reason it was allowed was that the second song was removed so it was now a singular song. I gave a tentative approval and let the judges make the final decision. Was it an error? I personally don't think so. We do the best we can with the circumstances we have. Its a good video and deserves a shot.
On that note, I am contemplating a few changes for next year. Including an "Other" category. Reducing the finalists in the other categories to 6 from 7 and adding another category. The other is where items like the so called "Short attention span theater" or "Meme" videos can be placed. Also where things like Wedding Rings (from 2006) would go.
It has been asked if FAD was really a AMV as defined by the rules...the honest answer is that its very much a gray zone. There were a few different videos that were very grey zone. Hello Fairy was one of them but it used all the same anime. There are likely to be some significant alterations/refinements for next year. And maybe I will FINALLY get that damned FAQ posted.
Lastly, regarding the controversy about Billy's videos.
I heard the same thing happened with Blue Orchid last year.
In my defense. I have never seen Zetsubo Sensei. I have seen various scenes from it here and there in videos but never the series itself. so while I looked at it and actually said it looked like opening credits to me, a few of the judges last year said they were pretty sure it wasn't so I let it through.
Regarding Duvet and My Drive Thru; I haven't seen Tora Dora. I have heard allllll about it from the raging fan boys at the office who just get squishy at the mere mention of the series, but I personally have seen very little of it. Regarding Persona 4. Haven't played ANY of the Persona games. I have zero interest in playing them. The idea of playing a video game where to summon your critter by shooting yourself in the head bothers me. This isn't to knock those that love that series. More power to you. It just not my thing.
So, the short answer is. We didn't know.

I would say get rid of AMTV and just replace it with "other".

Isn't that how AMTV used to be, kind of a dumping ground for good stuff that wouldn't necessarily work in other categories (or in some cases overflow from the other categories), or am I just way off base here?
Anyway, I like the idea of adding another category, would add a few more vids to the contest, which is never bad.

well i think the point was to keep the same number of videos because of time slot issues, but to change the categories a bit and reduce the number per.GreatLupin wrote:Isn't that how AMTV used to be, kind of a dumping ground for good stuff that wouldn't necessarily work in other categories (or in some cases overflow from the other categories), or am I just way off base here?Castor Troy wrote:I would say get rid of AMTV and just replace it with "other".

i'm kinda sad to see Pro head for the gallows, i think it worked amazingly in 08. i remember so many amazing vids that year. i agree last year was kinda eh (i say that having one of my own in pro last year) and for what it sounds like, this year may be the same. i think the issue may be because "Pro quality" videos take more time and not enough people can whip em out every year.
i hate to create more work, but what if Pro was put out as a category every 2 or 3 years instead of annually?

I don't think it would be too bad because it would only add 2 total vids if he reduced the other categories.
