This isn't the first time I've touched this subject.
Fuck, if they claim that it's just too much work to check the entries, give me the damn list of finalists and I'll have their dates in 15 minutes. It's really NOT THAT HARD.
I remember your rant :D

:?
============
yeah i dont like sending in old stuff either. as a personal note it makes me feel like a person that never let go of the past. lacking the ability to create anything new.

it is almost as if today, i am playing some NBA championship, my team wins and get I voted MVP. but then the year after that i can't do anything except boast about how i won a championship and was voted mvp. and i keep doing that year after year. i am pretty sure by the 3 rd year people will hate me and just wanna ignore me for it.
----

on a side note, grats to all the finalists.
now i know what it feels like to not submit D: *regret*

Vlad G Pohnert wrote:Honestly, I think maybe AX should consider a rule to at least limit the age of a video so not everything out there in AMV land is fair game every year.
AWA has the same age restrictions as AX does (i.e., none), so this could be a case of one big contest taking cues from another.

Note that I didn't say which is taking cues from the other, because I don't know which contest came first.

I agree. I had always thought it was this way and think it's a perfectly reasonable rule.

The Wired Knight wrote:I've never liked sending my old stuff - I cycle my works out one year after the first con I submitted them to. But that's my personal perogative. As far as cons not allowing old stuff it's a tough call. Overall I agree with Vlad that you risk it becoming an AMV block and defeat its yearly purpose.

However, since cons allready have a rule of not submitting the same video twice then you don't have the same issue provided that the audience isn't well versed in AMVs. We all know a few of those videos from a year to two years back. But the question is, does the audience? Generally speaking they do not so it's new to them and only we notice any discrepency. Hello Fairy will certainly do well at AX, and most people haven't seen it because that video has generally only hit east coast and northern conventions. Not many people attend conventions across the country and will instead only go to local ones.

Example - a friend of mine throws a new years party every year for the past 6 years. Every year at that party I compile a ton of the videos I really liked from the most recent AWA and showcase them to the group (the party generally is about 30-40 odd people). Everybody enjoys it but wonders why they didn't see these videos at AX. Point is though, had these year old videos been submitted to the following AX or the one thereafter, the audience won't notice the difference as it's brand new to them. The perspective of the editor and the audience are totally different for old videos and I think the audience doesn't have a problem with it.

There is some editor bias I think because most people don't want to not be in a contest due to a video taht is much older than theirs that is a proven success making it in. Personally I don't fret it but I understand the argument here as you feel that there is unfair competition involved. However, the contests (in my opinion) at most cons is for the audience's sake, not the editors'.

Once again...
Radical_Yue wrote: If all else fails, screw the audience. I hate the public, but what the hell ever happened to standards? You can go around claiming that the audience will come stare and cheer for a giant smelly dog turd if they haven't seen it previously but what about those who actually give a shit about the shit?
Love my analogy don't ya?

What? You don't LOVE it? Yeah...this beat out a video that has been in the works for over 4 years. A video that is edited so freaking well you would think that it was originally made that way.

Kisanzi and I were in the car talking about the way this contest is judged. From what we can tell, it almost looks like the judges just pick out sources they recognize/like from the entries in the contest. Then it appears they just skim them quickly to verify there aren't any subs or anything. I can't imagine them doing any more than that with the finalists that are chosen every year.
"Oh, this one has DBZ? I hate that show, skip it..."
Otherwise videos with excellent editing such as Castor Troy's would make it in, as apposed to Death Note videos that claim to be drama that are miserably edited to Bohemian Rhapsody.
