Re: Smokers
NPR has a podcast this month about organic food. I have not listened to it yet, but it's one person arguing that it's BS, and another person arguing that it's not.

Re: Smokers
One thing I can tell you, I do not trust HFCS. Their commercials make me even more uneasy. "trust us, it's FINE!" People will tell you it is no different from sugar, but the problem with it is that it is a different mixture of glucose/fructose. Studies have shown that this different mixture (more fructose than regular sugars, around 55% fructose VS an 50/50 split between fructose and glucose in natural plant sugars.) This doesn't sound like a lot, but there are studies that show that this tends to overload the liver with fructose, and as byproduct, the liver produces more triglycerides. This in turn makes your body fatter, and it also inhibits leptin secretion, so even though your stomach might be full, your brain never gets the message.

Another thing that makes me raise an eyebrow is Monsanto's genetically modified BT corn...which produces it's own pesticide toxins...inside it's own cells. Monsanto claims this is safe for human consumption, yet it kills all manners of insects that eat the corn.

Re: Smokers
Here's a interesting question: How many of the people in here actually have a disease/disorder that is a direct result of smoking cigarettes? I've always wondered if those claims were exaggerated. I know tons of people who smoke, but not many of them have lung cancer. Actually, I don't think any of them do. But then again they all smoke pot too, and I heard that reduces your risk of getting lung cancer.

Re: Smokers
Geez, it's not instantaneous, it takes decades to develop. I don't think anyone here has been smoking that long. Most of the older people on my dad's side of the family have had some sort of cancer brought on from tobacco. My grandpa smoked like a chimney, developed lung cancer, had to have a lung removed and was kept on a respirator before he eventually died. My great uncle was the same, except it was throat cancer. He had to have a tracheotomy. Talking out a throat hole? Not fun. The saddest part is that neither of them stopped smoking.
