Public QCs + Images in comments

Post by SQ » Sun Apr 25, 2010 12:38 pm

This topic is to discuss two entirely different subjects, the first being Public QCs.

When this site began, it wanted user interaction and feedback regarding the videos in its archives. These took the form of opinions.
Users would leave 'opinions' or reviews on videos they saw, and there was even a forum dedicated to the exchanges of such reviews. As years past, the weight and value of opinions deteriorated to make way for the 'instant gratification' generation. We received local downloads, and later the 'preview' function or streaming of videos. Along with the local download links, we got 'quick comments' or QCs for short.
These were made to be just as the name implied- a quick comment to show your appreciation or depreciation for a particular video, anonymously.

However, many users only give QCs, as they don't want to use up the time to leave a full-fledged opinion. Because of this, some QCs are rather helpful in critiquing a video.

Originally, the .org allowed creators to make two opinions of their choice 'public'- to display to all potential viewers the reviews of this video. Since more and more users are only utilizing the function of quick comments, why should there not also be an ability to make some or all quick comments public for others to see as well?

It is shameful for me to see a video with zero opinions but many quick comments. While this is fault does lie on the viewers who do not wish to fully contribute in the form of an opinion, I still believe it would ultimately be beneficial if these QCs were able to be publicly displayed.

Images in Comments

More often, creators choose to make a sort of teaser image or banner to help promote or showcase their AMV(s). These banners are often quite refreshing to see, and are just another outlet of an artistic endeavor very closely related to video editing.
Currently, the img tag is not supported in video descriptions. Many creators bypass this by using a sort of css hack instead, where the AMV 'banner' is places as the 'background' of the video description section.

This limits the ability for those who do not know CSS or that the 'hack' exists to display their own banners and thus 'pretty up' their video descriptions. Simultaneously, it also promotes bypassing of the .org's intentional limitations (although arguably it does no harm, that's still not a good thing to promote).

I believe since many creators bypass this limitation, and many of the .org staff realizes this but does nothing to prevent it, we should make the 'AMV Banner' somewhat official. Whether this be through the availability of the img html tag in comments or through a particular size that limits banner size and placement (similar to that which exists on the creator bio pages- though by directly linking to a URL rather than using an upload form) is up to the site's discretion.

However, since the site openly assists users who wish to put images in their video description(s) (I just saw this in Site Help), why don't we make the use official so all have access to it?

Thank you for your time.

Holy shit! Wild SQ appears!!!

I actually support the ideas, though don't know if our programmers would be willing to code this....

I'm not sure about the QCs, but for the img tag being allowed in comments, that should theoretically only be a five minute fix.

That is if they decide to allow img tags, or if they would rather have an actual system, as in a dedicated HUD or something to put your banner, sort of like with the profile image you can have in your AMV creator bio.

Also, 'sup ng?
Sort of surprised people actually remember me. xD

Random thought:
For QCs I thought it would be kind of cool to just have them appear as a standard comment system would underneath the video description or the video's preview. Like most other multimedia streaming sites, where comments are under the video.
But, I know a lot of people wouldn't want to show all their QCs, and I didn't want to step on any toes suggesting full publicity of QCs.

I'm pretty sure someone already suggested adding the option to make QC's publics. It would be very hard to find it, though. I agreed with it that time, and I still think the same way.

And about adding images to the comments without having to use a CSS hack, I agree as well. If it's allowed that way, I don't see a reason to not allow it the easy way.

I had the same reaction. At first I was like, who is SQ? Wtf are you guys talking about? Then I saw his avatar and remembered instantly.

I remember images better than I remember names >>
