After all, these are a DIRECT part of any AMVer - just look at how much time the guys and gals from AMV Announcements give those ^^

There was once a wallpaper thread and avatar thread, but both of them have been locked due to inactivity. You can probably start a new thread for those or ask a mod to unlock the old ones. Probably not related to your graphics contest suggestion, but there has also been an annual Ms Anime Universe contest and (tri)annual Mr Anime Universe, though I'm not exactly sure when (or if) they'll start this year.
