Jackson Browne, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Hey, here's an example of great pop music. :)

Detroit, MI, 12/7/02. First time seeing Petty in concert. Went with my dad. Awesome, awesome show.

I had very little familiarity with Browne, but my dad was a fairly big fan, so he was able to tell me the names of most of the songs. I didn't love most of what I heard there, but (1) my dad informed me that he omitted many of his early classics (2) I did really like his song "Fountain of Sorrow". Here's what I was able to get of that set:

1. On the Boulevard
2. (Didn't recognize)
3. Fountain of Sorrow
4. About My Imagination
5. Naked Ride Home
6. (Some new song, didn't recognize)
7. Never Stop
8. Culver Moon (dedicated to Heartbreaker Scott Thurston)
9. Doctor, My Eyes
10. Running on Empty

The Heartbreakers' performance was incredible. I had no idea Petty would still have so much energy left in him. Here's that set:

1. The Last DJ*
2. Love is a Long Road
3. Have Love Will Travel*
4. Free Fallin'
5. When a Kid Goes Bad*
6. Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid)
7. I Won't Back Down
8. You Don't Know How It Feels
9. I Need You (Beatles Cover, done previously for a Harrison tribute)
10. Feel a Whole Lot Better
11. Can't Stop the Sun*
12. A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)
13. The Waiting
14. King's Highway
15. Learning To Fly
16. Yer So Bad
17. Lost Children*
18. Refugee
19. Mary Jane's Last Dance
20. Runnin' Down a Dream
21. You Wreck Me
22. American Girl

The omission of "Breakdown" I thought to be strange, but hell, I ain't complaining. I think the 3 best performances were "Runnin' Down a Dream", "American Girl", and "Love is a Long Road", which nearly sounded like a spot-on match in sound quality of the studio version. "I Won't Back Down" was more than satisfactory, but was lacking something in the backup vocals department. They did a cool quieted-down version of "Learning to Fly". The songs played off the new album definitely gave me a favorable impression of it, especially "Can't Stop the Sun" (disjointed as it was).

Petty had two spiels he went into a couple of times during the show: How much radio sucks nowadays, and that, because of the lack of a corporate sponsor, "this concert is brought to you by you (the ticketholders)". The t-shirt I got sports that nifty lil' catchphrase.

Overall, it was well worth the ticket price, and although it's not saying much, quite easily the best concert I've been to.
