My interpritation on abstract art.

Abstract art: Art with no defined meaning. Its purpose is to let the viewer interpret its meaning for him/herself. It can be a test of someones interpretation skills.. And it's why some people like it.

Most will not like my witting. It's abstract and seems meaningless. But if you can look past the potential of confusion, and want to find out what I really mean, then read ahead.


My interpritation on what most people think of abstract art.

"Abstract Art is meaningless! It does not challenge my intellect at all! I truly  believe it has no place in this world and is only making people dumber. I mean come on! Things should not be up for interpretation. They should be factual. It's just a dead end.

Boo independent thinking! Get the facts strait! Stop acting like the factual things in life should be questioned and up for interpretation. That never got us anywhere in life."

I see it as an outlet for people that suck at art, but I do know those who don't suck at art tend to at times use it as if it does have a well thought out and good use. Some abstract art I find beautiful, other times it just look like a dumb looking blob of nothingness that someone made with little thought out meaning. Hey also its a good outlet for some people. Let them play with it.

I can see many other reasons to not like it and to laugh at the people that like it and practice it. I'm on my Iphone so I wont bother going on.

That is not the definition of abstract art. Abstract art is art that is abstract, i.e. art where concepts or ideas, often ones which cannot otherwise be represented, are codified and made 'real' via abstract visual forms. Think of the word "abstract" on that - what do you think that means? "Abstract" has nothing to do with subjectivity or openness-to-interpretation. It's not a "make your own meaning" kind of artform, unless what you are trying to abstract is something like subjectivity or absurdity. Abstract art is not inherently audience-oriented as far as interpretation, in fact it's completely opposite in most cases.

I treat it as I would any other art. If I like it, great! If I don't, I'm going to move on and find something else.

Sorry. I got the first part of my definition from urbandictionary and it's explanation had high ratings and I took it's example and added to it. Sorry my understanding may be off, but in the world of art, things do seem to be up for interpretation and making your own meaning.

I think I'm thinking of the wrong art form. What was the art form that started to get really popular in the early 1900? I'm not good with definitions.

The art I'm thinking of is when you have to really try to interpret what it is you are seeing and art where you have to think about the emotions involved when making it.

Some art is very straight forward. Some is not and require more thought on it to understand it. What do you call that art? I didn't take an art history class, I don't know all the names and styles of art that exist. If you think you know what I'm talking about, please help me out. Thank you.

hehe.. of course not. Nevermind. I'm sure, from looking at google image search, abstract art is the right name.

So I'm curious.. what do you guys think about abstract art?

modernism? sounds like the works the urbandictionary citation is trying to describe. but modernism is just art that tries to be different from pre-modernist art.
