perhaps it's just me being on an LCD monitor, but I see nothing wrong with that picture.

I'm on a CRT and I don't see it either. What area of the picture are you thinking of?

If you gain up the image there is some noise/grain, but that is normal. You can't really get it perfect unless it is like vector based and not compressed video. Also, make sure VirtualDub's output setting is set "Use output setting" and not "Fastest (16-bit)".
Insert clever text/image here.

Re: Grain,Noiise Problem.
I can see what you're saying about the noise. It honestly is nothing. Any filter that you could apply to smooth it out will just mess up the rest of the footage, unless you were to set the filter to work on only a section of the the footage for certain frames, which would be a waste of time because you'd have to be looking around for it throughout all the footage and writing up the code. It's something that you can only catch when looking at a still frame and even then, as people have just said, they cant really see anything wrong with it. When the footage is in motion, it wont be noticeable at all. It really isnt a problem at all and to get that 100% perfect quality look wont be worth it, especially since no one will take notice of it.

Re: Grain,Noiise Problem.
Even after cranking my monitor's brightness up all the way I couldn't see it. You didn't resize the image to fit it on the thread page, did you? Sometimes that can mess with how it appears, along with which resizer you opted to use. Some soften the image, others don't (or only selectively soften to mitigate ringing artifacts and so on).
If you've not done any smoothing, then a really light smoothing filter would do (both spatial and temporal), but that's just for general recommendation, not this particular problem - which like I said, I can't see. My pre-processing scripts usually include a deen("w3d",2,8,8,8,8) line, which covers it for most of the stuff I've worked with over the past three years or so. New anime releases are generally very very clean.
