Hey what's up,
Okay this is the situation me and several other producers here in NYC. Are planning to release a Television Cable Access Show. The show will include topics of Anime, Games, Imports and so on. Basically everything will be focus on Anime/Videogames related products.
I have download many AMV and I'm also in the process of releasing my own soon. I seen many good AMV and a fair amount of bad AMV. All in all is anyone interested in making submissions of your AMV?. So that we can air your AMV and have NYC Residence view your work. I know that the the content is copyrighted. But no one will be sued, Since the cable access station is based on a nonprofit organization.
I do not have time to download as many AMV as I use to since, school, work and taking courses on Video production. We will soon get our own P. O. Box and will be taking in Submissions to AMV is anyone interested? The show will be release in spring of 2003 the latest will be summer 2003. Why so long? Because this show will be on weekly for 30mins. And we would like to preview, review and discuss as many things that is happening in the anime/videogame market.
The cable station that we are associated with is www.Mnn.Org

While this sounds liks a really neat idea- especially since we get a number of NYC stations, but I think you're probably going to run into problems with copyrights if you're planning on broardcasting AMVs. I know there have been people who have wanted to show AMVs on their school's TV station/network and not been able to because of the problems of royalties to the copyright holders of the footage and music that would be shown. You would likely need to get permission from the copyright holders to show the AMVs. The anime companies might give it to you- I would think they would see the benefit of the free advertising for their products and are likely to be familiar with AMVs, but they may well not, and I would be genuinely shocked if the music companies gave you permission. You might be able to show a short (like 15-20 seconds) clip of an AMV and claim Fair Use, but the whole thing is a different matter.

I really wouldn't worry about this. Cable access gets away with murder because of it's low visibility. When broadcast comes into play and you're profiting from someone else's material you'd probably want to secure the proper licenses for the anime and the music... but when we talk about cable access, where one show might get a dozen viewers in a single airing, no one really wants to persue the producers because the impact that the show has is so small. The legal fees just to have a cease and desist letter drafted and sent are more than any production company wants to spend on some otaku in upstate new york who is really just enjoying a hobby.Ashyukun wrote:While this sounds liks a really neat idea- especially since we get a number of NYC stations, but I think you're probably going to run into problems with copyrights if you're planning on broardcasting AMVs.
So air them anyway and see what happens. I can pretty much guarantee that no one will care.

A long time ago, a noteworthy NYC mayor (although his name escapes me at the moment...
) enacted a law that prevents any regulation whatsoever of NYC's public access cable.
Basically, anything from surgery to nudity can be broadcast on NYC's public access cable.
I agree that the copyright troubles will be a major stumbling block - but AFAIK the cable system can't do anything to keep them from being played.
However, if they are played, I don't think anything would be stopping the music and/or anime companies' lawyers from issuing "cease and desist" notices, and from their billing the individuals running the show for the appropriate royalties.
And, while I'm posting: Please ensure that, if you guys *do* actually go through with the network, you *NEVER, EVER* play anything I've edited together. I have no intrest in getting involved if legal troubles ensue.

Interesting... I didn't know that about NYC's public access cable. Though I can't say I'm totally surprised... there is some weird stuff on there.
I'm on the fence about whether or not I'd want any of my vids shown (not that I have hosting for anyone to be able to see them at the moment anyway
) for the same reasons as jbone. There may only be a small chance of it being taken notice of, and the cable company may not be able to stop it- but he's right, there isn't anything to stop the copyright holders from issuing C&D letters (which would be bad were they to take greater notice of us, all told) or to try suing you for royalties from the broadcast of their materials. It sounds silly- but it's all too common. As I understand it, royalties for music is the reason that you very infrequently see (or more accurately, hear) marching bands on TV- because while the band may have paid their royalties when they bought the music, the station broadcasting hasn't, and therefore can't broadcast more than short snippets of it.
Has anything like this been (successfully) tried before?
