Creating Original AMV's

Post by kossyremp » Sun Oct 25, 2009 6:03 am

The majority of my AMV's are random action (although some are fun, sentimental, romance etc.), but Im struggling with the concept of making really origional AMV's. I mean my anime shows are fine and my music is fine (I have loads of shows and songs that Ive seen no-one edit) and I think my editing skills are pretty good (300 subs on YT merely from AMV's isnt too bad) but its the idea's when editing the video thats not that origional for me. I want to know how to think up some great origional things that I could use in my videos. Any help?

It's hard to tell. I suggest you to read through this very good presentation by Hugh MacLeod about how to be creative/original:

It's really good and it may help you out.

Originality is an illusion.

Just know what you want to say about the source and say it.

Yeah well... true! Originality is also how good you can hide your sources of inspiration :|

Think its more important to do what you want to do and not focus on originality. There's nothing wrong with doing something unoriginal as long as your willing to accept complaints about it. It doesn't have to be original to be enjoyable but in most cases it helps. You can't tell someone how to be creative other then try doing something no ones done before... we can offer suggestions for getting in the creative mood but the rest is up to you.

My creative moments usually come during rainy, dreary, quiet days with some alcohol... Well for my writing anyways. Amv ideas friggen come and go more then I care to edit to. The original ones seem to come when I'm doing something totally unrelated to them. Just comes up out of no where honestly.

Don't expect all original ideas to succeed just because they are original though.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Stop thinking of a video as a song/source pairing.
Come up with a concept.
Use your song and your source to execute that concept.

It sounds simple, but this paradigm shift is what separates what i'd like to call "Anime&MusicLOL" from an actual AMV.

No. Rofl @ threads asking people "how do you think?". Now I've seen it all.

If people knew were creativity came from, we'd have a pill by now. If you are really dry for that spark, smoke some pot. Change your perception.

You know when you come up with an idea and there is a little voice in your head that says "no don't do that that's stupid."

IGNORE THAT VOICE.

You know when people say you shouldn't or you can't do something?

IGNORE THOSE PEOPLE.

You know how we have these "rules" on Aspect ratio, quality, syncing, aesthetics etc.?

IGNORE THOSE RULES.

If you want to make Rukia's eyes explode and fire out a stream of blood, urine and disembodied Haruhi heads then you should damn well do it.

I gotta admit, I'd laugh.
