I agree context is always important, its what makes something interesting.
Story is also important but not always needed, some songs and some AMV types are fine without any...
But i believe for best results the song should be without or with limited lyrics.
Applying a story to a lyric less song its easier but for me its more correct and with more freedom.
In the other hand, finding the proper scenes for a song with lyrics, its a hard work but in the end it limits someone imagination. ( or rather is forcing someone's scene decisions )
The only anime music videos which i made having a story were lyric less.
Is context/story important?

I saw a vision of hell, with thousands of people screaming in agony, evil laughs and little rabbits.Knowname wrote:I TOTALLY saw a wheat feild and crows
More than a context or story, An AMV needs IDEA, if you know what you want to tell, you should impress it in your work, if you do it right people will catch the idea and your work as an editor will be considered good, if you fail, it will just sucks.

Context is a bonus for enthusiasts. Shit, put that on a T-Shirt.
The work needs to stand on its own. To paraphrase an example by Thom Yorke, "when a bunch of children go to the museum to see Rothko, they are all amazed by the joy of the colors. All the adults see is some poor sod who offed himself".
When I made Dead To The World, I didn't intend for a little plaque to play next to the video saying "Beowulf made this video when he was living with his mother at the age of 17. He was upset at the world and blah blah blah kill everything blah blah bad vibes blah blah blah virgin blah blah In 2003, the AMV climate was boring and superficial which lead young Julian to blah blah blah".
This is reason why I think Andy Warhol is garbage. 99% of the value and impact of his work comes from the context in which it was created. Take all the 60s away, and its a bunch of pictures of Marilyn Monroe repeated. Fucking yawn.
